Remote oil filters pros and cons

Was just at the machine shop discussing my block. Is there a consensus on drilling an 8ba for a remote filter? How much does it matter? Any cons besides the ugly filter and lines? I'm talking about the 90% flow scheme....

I figure this has been discussed to death, but I gotta know!

If you look back at previous posts, there was a recent one on full flow and partial flow systems using remote filters. Lots of pictures and information was posted on that thread. JM

I have not had any problems over the last 20 years not running a filter at all. Change the oil about every 1500 miles or so. Sure allows for a clean look. Others may disagree, but this has been my experience and I do my own wrenching. Joe

The original bybass filter will filter out smaller particles than a "full flow" filter.

A bypass filter will filter out 95% of 2 micron particles.
A full flow filter will filter out 40& of 10 micron particles, and on cold startup the thick oil mostly flows through the bypass in the filter (full flow only means all the oil goes into the filter housing, not that it all gets filtered.

the Mercedes diesel that went over a million miles only had a bypass filter, and a screen.

The best filtering system has both --full flow for big debris, and bypass for the small stuff.

Most times the dirt ,and metal shavings were already there when the engine was assenbled, leftover from machining operations, and dirty parts bolted on ( I have had many engines apart that had "just been rebuilt")

After a lot of screwing around I have come up with the "Final Solution". Originally on my 8ba I wanted to locate the filter on the passenger side out of sight. I did all the work but then checked the fit with the firewall and discovered it was a no go. I bit the bullet and made a bracket to mount the filter on the frame and made another trip to the hoses and fittings shop. The car has rack and pinion steering and mustang ll front end so everything clears ok. Some people choose not to filter. I like it and it doesn't cost that much. What else would I be doing if I didn't have all the aggrevation of building a hot rod?

if you want to pay for it now, the drilling will be done...hard to do it if you want to after the engine is all put back together....and if you don't want to run the filter, you don't have to, but all the machine work is done....JMO...Mike

I have a filter on mine but would not put one on again. The oil gets changed every 1000 miles why reduce the oil pressure. This is in a 1940 A block

On the 8ba engine I built a couple of years ago, I used the 100% oiling system and worked okay no problems but took a while to install it (used hard lines to remote filter mounted to engine pan) the 8ba I just finished I used a remote filter again but used the high output M15 oil pump which is more oil than the engine really needs. Where the oil line comes out of the block to the filter I am using a vibration resistant needle valve, now after the engine is warm and oil hot I open the valve to the pressure I want which passes a lot more oil through the filter than before. Now the time is reduced for all the oil to be filtered, better, maybe and maybe not but was faster to install.
