got the adjustable lifters in, cam back in ,timing gear and crank lined dot to dot,put cover on and pin in till tdc #1 now the question how do i line up the pump shaft and gear and dist in the right order, best i can figure i lined the oil pump shaft slot to the nub that goes up in the block then figured out where #1 was on the cap lined then lined gear so slot from the dist would slide in keping #1 lined then reinstalled oil pump ,not sure if this is right ,but want to get it right because waiting on new mallory dist from bubba gmc to install any help would be great, did call a few older guys near me ,but the response was go buy a book to learn it.they didnt seem to get that i understand how this stuff works just want to make sure i am putting it back right

If you are using the stock dist it doesn't matter where ---when you set the timing you loosen the screw holding the dist cam --it will adjust infinitely ---I don't know about the Mallory ---that you might have to wait for

it is good to check the dimple on the timing gear to see if it is large enough to feel with the pin ---now is the time to check it and drill it deeper if it is off or small

There are 2 was to do this...

1. Drop the dist. in and set the timing, then tighten the screw and nut on the
head. Leave the plug wires long till you have the timing set then trim the wires.

2. You really don't want to do this! Take the dist. apart, loosen the screw/clamp that
holds the rotor/cam assembly to the lower plate and move it. Sometimes the press
fit( if you do this ) won't hold good, even with the screw/clamp...now you have
a mess!

Do #1..........Dudley

I've never worried about the location of the slot in the oil pump and dist. drive assy. because the model A distributor points cam is adjustable. With a Mallory dist. , when the timing pin drops in place. where ever the rotor tip points will be number one time. Connect the plug wires in a counter clockwise direction 1243 around the dist cap. You can then rotate the distributor, like a modern car to fine tune the timing. Clockwise rotation of the distributor will advance the timing and so on.

If the slot location in the drive gears are important to you, you can do this. Insert a long straight head screwdriver down the hole that the distributor fits through the head and down to the slot in the oil pump. The oil pump will turn freely with a screwdriver while the oil pump and distributor drive gear assy, is removed. You can set the slot the way that you want it and then install the drive assy.
