Rear Hub Assembly

You're probably past this point by now, but here's a trick I've used to remove grease seals. Take a small drill bit and VERY CAREFULLY drill a small hole in the seal. Then thread in a small sheet metal screw just a couple of turns; don't go too deep. Grab the screw with pliers and pop the seal out.

That is a great idea!

Thanks. The earlier picture is the way I found it when the drum came off. On reassembly, I’ll install it the other way. Like this, correct?

Your axle key now reversed of what it was looks worn as I can see a previous ridge line in the side of the key. Check to see if you can feel one or if it’s just the photo. It must fit tight in the axle and snug in hub. There’s bad advice in previous post above about tightening to line up hole bad not use a torque wrench. The hubs should be torqued to a minimum of 100 pounds and I go to 125 and even 150 if axle threads are great. The hub fit is suppose to be tight. Replace with new keys if they are worn.

That axle looks like it needs a good cleaning or polishing.

Thanks, Larry. I replaced both keys with new ones while I had it apart.

I cleaned it the best I could while I had it apart. I never thought about polishing. How would you polish it?

Try Scotch brite

I’ve used that on my horn internals, but it never occurred to me that Scotch Brite would be useful on an axle spindle. I plan to try that the next time I have it apart. Thanks for the tip.
