Radiator hose question

I bought new hoses and clamps and new lower pipe. My question is does anybody use a lube or a sealant on the hoses to make them go on easier and to help elimate any leaks ? Thanks Ron

I always use a little water pump grease, makes them go on easier and helps to eliminate leaks.

Well, where are you expecting the leaks to originate from? If the water pipe is pitted, use JB Weld to fill the pits to make a permanent repair. If the water inlet/outlet neck is too rough, use a sander to dress it down a little (usually not an issue though). Then cut the hoses to the proper length, (some suppliers provide incorrect lengths) followed by soaking the hoses in very hot water to make the pliable. Then install and after the engine has come up to temps, re-tighten and they usually won't leak, ...even with original-style clamps.

.

I use Silicone Spray Lubricant by Gunk. I spray it on the inside of the hoses, but more important, I spray it on the outside of the hoses where the clamps install. If you are using the original style clamps they have a tab that should glide over the surface of the hose as the clamp is tightened. Quite often the tabs have a tendency to dig into the rubber. When this happens it will create a tunnel under the hose that will leak water. The more you tighten the clamp the worse is the leak. The silicone will allow the tab to glide as the clamp is tightened.
