Question about mechanical brakes

Just a quick question about the clevis and pins at each wheel for the mechanical brakes. I assume they should be tight and have no slop in them. Mine are quite sloppy proabably from the 80 years of use. By the time all the slack gets taken up the pedal has moved quite far and hasn't even started engaging the brakes yet.

lso I've put on new linings and retracted the adjusters as much as I can. The drums fit but there is some drag on the new linings that, I'm sure would wear off quite quickly, but is this normal?

Some slight drag on the new linings is normal. Just make sure you turn the drums and arch grind the shoes. If you have slop in the linkage, replace the the clevis' and pins.

Sounds like adjustment issues . Putting the pins in is the last thing you do when adjusting brakes . When you put them in you pull all slack out so play in the pins shouldn't cause your problem . A simple thing to try would be to adjust the rods so that the pins just go in & try it . If this helps you need to do a full adjustment .

Check all parts for wear. My problem was the parts on the backing plates the roller rode on. They were gouged and mad the rollers move unevenly.

Take them to a brake shop that has a shoe grinder. You need to find a old shop, the new shops don't have the grinder.

i was able to get all new clevises at a good hardware store for my 36 pickup. also i bought a rebuilt cross shaft from the Ford barn swap it has grease fittings in it. the old one would pull forward then it would finely rotate. the main thing is to get all the slop out of the rods and petal and cross shaft. about 2 months ago i had my drums turned and the shoos relined and arced to the drums. also i installed Flathead Ted's floaters, he is a member on the barn. i drive my 36 all the time and in town.almost every day. with a little work yours will work good have fun Brendan
