Pulling the engine & ******...

I lost the clutch in the Coupe on the way to Michigan and I'm pulling the engine / ****** instead of dropping the rear end. Any advise on doing so, and what else should I look at while I have things apart?

Without knowing the history of your car and knowing how much mechanical experience you have it is hard to give advice. Unless the engine has been rebiult within the last 10-15 K miles it may be a good time to check the bearings and adjust shims accordingly. If your not very familure with the inside of the engine it may be best to contact a local club member to help you. I hate laying under the car to adjust them. Also look at the condition of the motor mount pads and look at the mounts for sag or cracks. Give the U-joint a breif inspection and make sure it does not feel sloppy when you rotate it. I can not think of much else I would worry about if your not having any other problems. Rod

I figure on taking the winter to do the work and like you I have no desire to lay on a cold garage floor while kinking my neck to see things. I figured it would be easier to pull the engine & ****** and perform multiple jobs. The car was last restored in the late 60's. The only major engine work that's been done since then was installing a new oil pump, and a new head gasket (both by me last spring). Otherwise it's been 40+ years. I'm thinking about replacing the U-Joint since it's so hard to get to and I'll have it apart.

I certianly would not change the u-joint if it seems in good shape. If well lubed they last a long long time. Rod

pull them seperate . its easier in MHO . unless there is trouble with the trans also , leave it in ................ steve

Thats for sure, don't get too carried away with your inspection as you may not like what you find. If it is running good now, just make note of what you find and prepare for a new engine in the future if it seems worn excessively. Rod

first time model a eng puller, just finished, after all electrical connections, grill and rad pulled, it was a 45 min job for a 70 yr old. Hardest thing was the 4 3/4 mount bolts on the side. Had to clear all the grease away, then used my 1/4 drive with adapter to 3/4 size socket. went like a charm. Then there are the pedals. Just another 1st time experience. :):)

Did you pull just the motor, or the motor and ******?

pulling the motor is easy...putting it back in can be another story. Have at least 2 extra people help you put it back in.

Next time do the same thing with the 1/4" adapter and socket but get yourself a 1/4" air ratchet and see how things go. I couldn't do without mine for this.
