Procedure for assembling '34 Rear Axle

Hi,

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the procedure for assembling a '34 rear axle?

I've got info on the pinion bearing pre-load at 12 to 17 lb in, and that the differential side bearing adjustment should be a 'light drag'.

But what about the other clearances? I've heard mention of 0.050" to 0.010" backlash, but how/where do you measure this? Is this backlash the amount of axial clearance? Do you assemble with a set of gaskets either side of the banjo until there is no backlash and the diff side bearing drag slightly and then move 0.050 to 0.010 of gasket to the left side?

Many Thanks,

Mike

The ford 1932-1936 engine and chassis repair manual { V-13 } covers this . Backlash is the amount of freeplay in the pinion and is correct at .006-.010 .

Buy one of these '39'-'40 repair manuals. I have a lot of early Ford literature and this manual has the best article (7 pages) on rebuilding the early Ford rearend. There are several people selling reprints of it on ebay.

I have a procedure that I copied some time ago on the Jalopy Journal. If you would like a copy send me a PM with your email address. I think there have also been some posts on this in the recent past. You could do a search and maybe find some of these posts.
