Possible solenoid problem

Did you check to make sure you had a good ground? It may not be any of those items. If you don't have a good ground on a 6 volt system you will get the same symptoms you described in your original post.

+1 on this route, a very good ground is something folks don’t think about, clean tight and bright, I usually add a ground between engine block and frame/body.

Feedback I decided to take off the cable from solenoid to starter and recheck the terminals. Wire brushed both ends and the terminals. Put it back on and car started. Porblem solved right? Wrong, an hour later it won't start. Same issue, just clicks. I loosened the connection at the starter motor and it started. I now think I have a bad cable and ordered a new one. I can wiggle the cable and get it to start. Terminal on starter motor is squeeky clean. I will keep you all posted

There is also the possibility that there may be an internal problem with the terminal on the starter.

Just a thought.

Yes, I thought about that. I want to eliminate the cable as a source and then if I still have a problem, I know it is the starter motor. Thanks for all the help

Closure on this issue----- It was a bad cable from solenoid to starter motor. Turns out this has been my problem all along. I had trouble starting when engine was hot in the beginning. Then worsened to "No start". I had cleaned all connections, but didn't consider old cables that were very close to exhaust manifold. Long story short "New Cable solved the problem" . I am replacing all cables and ground straps

I got a bad one from NAPA last year. The fact that they took it back with no questions asked leads me to believe that it is not a rare occurrence.

they send it off to Chinaville, and the Dude gets a bowl of Fishhead soup for his work
