Could some body post a picture of the 1928 AR front fender and a regular 1928-29 so I can hopefully see the difference between the two?? Thanks in advance.

Suggest you refer to the Judging Standards; there are two different Very Early front fenders, the earliest has a large flat area at the upper end, on the second generation the flat area is only about 6" wide; both of these fenders do not have a forged rienforcing insert where the fender bolts to the fender brace and the fender brace has a raised area that inserts into the bead of the fender. The third generation front fender has a 6' flat area but the fender has a forged tab in the bead recess of the fender where it bolts to the fender brace, the fender brace has just a round hole and is flat, no boss. The lnext style is common to 28-29 and does not have a 6" flat area at the rear of the fender.

Sorry I don't have any pictures.

Ron

as Mr. Rude mentions, note the wide lip at the rear where the fender mounts to the frame

Dennis,

I believe your fenders are 2nd or 3rd generation fenders ? The type fender braces and the rienforcing type in the fender bead at the fender brace will confirm the type.
Look at the wide flat area on the photos posted by Charles Reese above; these are very early fenders. There is also a difference in rienforcing where the fender bolts to the running board.

Charles and Ron,

I know about the 2 different styles of braces at the bead and the back of the
fender, but, OHhhhh crap the slight curve change between the 1st and the 2nd.
Do you have a date of changes for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd styles??

Thanks, Dudley

Dudley,

I do not have the date changes. This would be a good question for the Judging Standards Committee to answer.

I had a July 28 Phaeton that had 58,000 original miles; the body was SFA---, it had the the 2nd generation front fenders and 1st generation fender braces; the rear fenders only had the small tab in the fender bead and the fender braces had the boss.
I know the car was original, and I was the 3rd owner; the car was bought new by the Post Master in Coulterville, CA. I had to replace the left front fender as the Post Master must have hit every mail box post in the county and the repair would have been impossible to make. The car also had the smooth running board aprons. Les Andrews bought the car from me when Chico hosted the Northern Calif. Roundup in the 90's. The Phaeton is still in the Grass Valley area.

Ron The fenders on the truck Are wider were they attach on top of splash and have forged braces and are wider on the flat compared to any other 28-29 fenders I have and the splash is tapered. They look the same to me as Charles Reese posted. I have never lifted the cab to verify year Month. Its raining to hard to have a look at the reinforcing. I was useing page 13-3 of the standards top view for comparison.

Dennis,

The flat area at the rear of the very early fenders are 1/2 to 3/4 inch wider than the 2nd and 3rd generation front fenders.

See Judging StandardsUnder "Early 1928s, page A9, Area 13: Sheet Metal"

"The curve of the inner surface of the front fenders was changed between August and September. The earliest fenders had a larger, wider flat area. The wide area became less obvious as production increased. There were three styles of early front fenders. The greater the curved inner surface, the earlier the fender"

Hope this helps,

Ron

Thanks Ron Ill do a little more reading And when it dries up a bit Ill pull the tarp and check for all the differences There's only a few nuts and bolts holding the whole truck together and most likely a collection of parts.

Well,....the " oh crap " is for the 4 front fenders I need to look at! Will continue
this when Dennis and I figure out what we have.

Thank you, Dudley in the clear, DRY, valley.
