Petrol tank crud

Found all this paint flake just behind the shut off valve just hoping this has been the source of my problems.

I had the same problem. The previous owner of our 160B had tried to use a sealing product in the tank, which did not adhere. Ended up having to remove large pieces through the fill neck, using long handled forceps. You probably have many more pieces in your fuel tank. Mine is not leaking as of yet.

Whatever the residue is, it sure isn't helping. What is the condition of tank inside? Dirty leg may help remove the sediment providing it isn't a decomposing tank liner as Glenn suggested.

Most of it is paint flakes and rust, I've had a look inside ( what you can see that is) and there are some rust patches, but considering the age not to bad. There isn't any sealer been used.

For sure you need the pencil filter in the tank valve.

How would paint get inside the tank?
That sure looks like rust and tank liner, just as Glenn said. I just got done removing the tank liner from my 1950 Studebaker tank, and that put an end to my fuel problems. Someone lined a mint tank 22 years ago and this new gas was removing it and plugging my gas line.

I haven't tried Marine Clean, but others have had good results using it to clean the tank. I'd flush out as much junk as you can, then use Marine Clean, then install the tank valve filter. You'll still get some fine junk in the sediment bulb, but that's easily cleaned.

Amazes me still how well that stock fuel sediment bowl filter system works to catch odd junk. Have absolutely no interest or inclination in pulling out that gas tank and having the thing cleaned n' sealed. Let the next guy do it. This car is just an ancient clunker for roaring around the back roads of Dogsbreath, PA. Intend to install a modern replacement gas filter thing on the fuel line as a secondary backup. Don't want none of that vile crap finding it's way into the sweet Marvel-Slobna carburetor.

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks, it still is a major undertaking for many of us to remove the tank, have it cleaned and possibly steamed, repaired, and repainted to match the vehicle. A job nobody appreciates in doing.

you guys are right about that pencel screen filter that goes in valve before I got that, about every couple miles I had to take off line and blow back into tank. I tryed to fiush tank but with out taking it off it didint heip. I was getting good at taking off the line and turning it around blow in shut off put on line and go! didint even drink much gas!

You could have just installed a Tee in the fuel line and run a hose up to the top of the dash, then when the blockage started you would just blow into the hose and continue on. :D

I put one of these filters on my rig. So far, so good. It has collected a fair amount of crud, but not excessive. Only have less than 400 miles so far on it.

Wow Carl u got any pics of it installed?? Are u running a pump?
No pictures yet. Will have shortly. At first I was not running a pump, but I only had a 6" drop to the Stromberg 97 and that wasn't enough. I now have a pump, but now that added another problem (doesn't it always??). I'm in the process of putting a pressure regulator on it now. Just have to get some fittings this afternoon.

Would be nice if a vendor would make an inflatable tank liner... I guess the trick would get the drain mated with the existing drain...

Finally got some pictures of the filter installed. Also shows the fuel pump, regulator/gauge, and stainless braided fuel lines. Also shows Tod's new cast exhaust header. Has about 1,300 miles on it now, works perfectly.

Check out the NAPA filter that fits in the sediment bowl. Much easier to clean and/or replace than the pencil filter, but lets debris jam the gas tap. Part number is 3039.

I have the tank out of my 30 got all the crud out used my pressure washer tank looks great now kept flushing it til water was clean now i have a cleaner degreaser in it and I will flush it again before putting in the etching liquid.
