As you mention etching, are you intending to install a liner? Is so, please research previous owners experience with coatings breaking down.
 
Just as a heads-up, where the pencil filter has an early advantage is trying to stop debris from entering the shut-off valve. When the debris enters the valve, it generally scores the brass which causes them to leak.
