A model A is too old to know that it can't charge a dead Optima, I left the ignition on for 3 months---the battery was dead,. it was 8 years old at the time, I found out when I went to start the car --late for a show, put my 3 amp trickle charger on it for 5 min, hand cranked it, 20 min later at the show it would start the car, drove 30 min on the way home and parked the car,now the battery is 14 years old, still cranks like the car is 12V.
I also had 2 "script" batterys that barely made 3 years, 1 used battery5 years, and 7,9 years from the other batterys ---never used a tender, I don't know what I will get when the Optima dies ----maybe I will cut a 12V in 1/2, i have taken the large Benz batterys that have damage on 1 end and made them into a 6V battery
Many of the newer chargers won't charge a "dead" battery --they need to see a voltage and sense that the polarity is correct, some also shut off before the battery is fully charged---probably because of litigation they try to make the chargers idiot proof---resulting in a product that doesn't work well but it won't hurt you.
