When I was a kid, I always tried to visualize how high volume or high pressure would react in a standard run of the mill auto engine. The oil flow meets resistance at all the bearings rotational clearances. I came to the conclusion that you only need higher oil flow & pressure when you are running higher bearing clearances since that would drop the pressure in some relation to the increased clearance.
A lot of race motors are set up loose so they can achieve higher rpms. This would be a good match up for either a high flow or higher pressure pump. On a stock engine with normal clearances, there isn't anywhere to go with the higher volume and higher pressure may become detrimental to the normal operation of the engine if it is too high. What ever doesn't make it to the bearings just goes right out the relief valve & back to the pan.
