Oil Filter

For those of you running a by-pass (partial flow) filter, what type of filter is being used? A proper by-pass filter or using a full flow filter plumbed in as a by-pass filter?

Kathy,

I think it doesn't matter whether a filter is in the direct flow or bypass flow line.

What's important is a low resistance to pressure pump, a pressure relief valve in case it ever gets clogged or a cold thick oil has to be pumped through.

I personally opted for a short screw-on filter (f. e. "MANN W 77") so that the style break isn't too noticeable. Painted engine green.

There's a temperature measuring strip stuck to the outside. In the cold season I put my wool sock around it so that the oil doesn't stay too cold

It's my opinion that first thing you must due to add an oil filter is clean out the oil pan. The second is to choose which type. On a partial system you can increase the volume of the pump as described in Burtz oil pump presentation. The collar that is added to pump might have to be eliminated or modified.

If a car putts around town at less than 40 mph and gets it's oil changed every 500 to 1000 miles, a filter would be optional. Inserted bearings are designed to be run with tighter tolerances for higher performance applications but are also less tolerances of dirty oil.
