o/d trans wiring

how do you wire up a o/d trans without the kickdown,& do you really need the relay thanks :)

Run a "hot" wire straight to the solenoid (you'll hear a click). I run mine through a toggle switch on the dash. I read about one guy here who runs it through a hi-beam switch on the floor. Just have to remember that you won't be able to put it in reverse when overdrive is engaged.

I think I'd wire it through one of those old 2-speed axle switches mounted on the shift lever so you can get to it when you need it plus you will "feel" if it is on or off. The relay was there to remotely operate the solenoid to keep the power wire to it shorter providing more voltage and also to give the engagement soledoid a way to shut the system off when in reverse lock out or kick down, that is, if you use a kick down switch.

One wire goes to the "ON" side of the relay for power and the other wire to the kick down switch. If you don't need the kick down, you'll not need to use that terminal or wire depending on how it's set up. The engagement solenoid grounds through the case for engagement. It will still need to be fused though and it should be a 30 amp fuse with a 6-volt system. Wire size will also have to be large for 6-volt systems.

you have to be careful using a short wired system. The motor was cut out with a wire to the coil during kick down and that won't exist without one. You just have to remember to let off of the gas a bit when you shift back out of overdrive. Always remember to turn it off for reverse or you'll really have problems. It just ain't meant to work in that direction.

so if i put a hot wire to a switch then from other side of switch to a relay then from that to solenoid it should work to disingage flick switch off ?? thanks rotorwrench trev

i run my truck with a cable, toggle switch, relay and solenoid. the toggle switch controls the ground side of an aftermarket relay.
