Noise in Transmission

i would like to have more info

1. does it only do it while moving
2. does it make noise in all gears
3. at what speeds do you hear it
4. in your video are you moving and then shift to neutral and continue coasting at approx the same speed and the noise winds down and goes away
5. does it do it driving in reverse
6. what happens if you just push the clutch in while moving without shfting to neutral

Mitch,
Still makes the sound when coming to a stop.
Seems to start after shifting into second and third
Over 15 MPH
It winds down after going into neutral and coming to a stop but doesn't quit when stopping. Still makes the noise when sitting still for a second or two
Never in reverse
No change when pushing in the clutch and leaving the shifter in gear.

In 3 rd gear its direct 1:1 ratio through the trans so that would eliminate the input to main shaft bearing being the problem

I am wondering if it could be a throw out bearing problem. Clutch adjustment could be to tight and the bearing is still spinning with the pedal not depressed. I would remove the top inspection cover and grease the bearing and take a gander in there. Also make sure your trans fluid is full and of the proper oil.
One key thing you mentioned is it still does it after you stopped and its temperature related only cold. I wouldn't rip the trans out just yet.

You know Mitch, my first thought was throw out bearing issue. I'll pull the cover and see what is going on. Do you know of a posted procedure for greasing the bearing?

There is a whole shopping list of reasons why strange noises eminate from a Model A transmission. Many are caused by people putting it together incorrectly. The Model A transmission is touted as being simple. Anything is simple when you know how it goes together correctly. There are about a dozen things you can do wrong that will cause noise.

I took one apart this week for overhaul. The owner said that when he put it in neutral with the clutch out it made a grinding noilse. When he pushed in the clutch the noise went away.

I found two things wrong.

1. The front ball bearing oil baffle was installed backwards. A simple over sight. However it caused the outer edge of the baffle to grind against the outer edge of the bearing and make noise and generate metal.

2. A repo idler gear was installed that had a bushing so tight on the idler shaft it would hardly turn.

yes for sure can be many things but with the description of what your customer does to make the noise it leads you to the right area by knowing what is turning and when.
thanks

From what I hear and see in the video it sounds like a bushing with no oil or grease.

Try this ... disconnect the speedometer cable and drive it, if it goes away the most likely problem is the bushing in speedometer on the main input shaft.

The noise in the video slows and stops when forward motion decreases and remains quiet with the engine idling at a stop. Sounds like the speedometer bushing.

What puzzles me is that you say it makes noise for a second or two after stopping. I did not hear that in the video. I suppose it is possible that you also have a dry bushing in the generator or water pump that makes noise while idling at a stop.

When this happened to me 45 years ago. It was only when cold and frequency decreased when coming to a stop. Sometimes it would not do it for days.

The noise happened more often as the weeks went by.

I pulled transmission and rearend 5 or 6 times looking for this noise.

Finally the speedometer started bouncing around one VERY cold morning and then I knew what the problem was.

The bushing would bind up, the cable would wind up a few turns and then release, causing the speedometer to bounce off the upper stop and go back toward zero.

A side note the video shows the amp meter charging 20 or 30 amps. A stock generator will be damaged if this continues.

More likely the rear end. High gear is a straight-through connection, and the pilot bearing is not turning whenever the clutch is out, only the front and rear bearings, and there is little load on them in high.

rust merchant stated it still has the noise stopped

Hey Rust Merchant

When the clutch is pushed in all the gear's stop,, & you still have the noise ?. I'ed check the T/O brg or pilot brg..Is the ****** rebuilt,,?? Sound's like a brg or bushing rubbing

I'ed get a big stick and put it up to your ear & go around putting it on different area's till you hear the noise thru the wood

Thanks Benson! I'll give that a try. In regards to the amp meter, I am not convinced that is working properly. I have only had the car four months, but it has always read high. I found a good excessive output test that I will run to make sure.

I greased the speedo cable last night and test drove; noise is gone! I'm going to drive it again later today.

Hopefully that was it! I'll post an update this evening.

that would be great if that was it. what threw me off is you said it made the noise stopped

Yeah. I thought it did, but after thinking about it, I'm not sure. Sorry about that. It definitely did it with the trans out of gear and pushing the clutch in made no difference.
