I'm new to all this model A stuff but have been playing with T's for a few years now and have a few ?'s.
I'm getting ready to tear into my A, a '28 Tudoor that's been sitting in a barn for a very long time (and looks it). I'm not concerned with the body, just going to keep it looking like it just came out of the barn but I want to go through the entire front end, all the brakes and the steering box. Probably rewire it , too. It runs good but the bearings need to be tightened up some and hopefully there's plenty of babbitt left, if not then the engines coming out and will get redone.
My questions right now are: Rear wheel bearings, I know with the T's, the original Hyats are much better than the solid roller repros. Is it the same with the A's and if so how hard is it to find good, original bearings and what should the rollers mike? Are the repro cast iron drums of good quality?
I've always heard that model A wheels were a dime a dozen and modelT wire wheels were scarce, hence the adapters to make A wheels fit on T's. Since owning this A, my experience is that '28- 29 wheels are hard to find in good shape and bring more than T wheels, at least on the popular auction site. I need to replace all my wheels and it looks like it's going to be an expensive proposition. You guys are more familiar with this stuff than I am, is this true from you perspectives?
That's all for now, like I said, I'm just starting this project and I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get into it. Oh, and I did change all the fluids before I attempted to start or run the car, even pulled the pan and cleaned it out. I was supprised at how clean things were and at the lack of sludge or metal fragments in eng, trans. and rearend. Transmission and rearend don't seem to be noisey when driving, either.
Thanks in advance
Tyler
