Since I had so much problem getting a "professionally" rebuilt Zenith I ordered this Zenith 13922 for the car because of some of the comments I saw on the Barn. User seemed to like them. I thought I would share my experience and thoughts on this carburetor.
I installed it this morning and yes it works better than any old Zenith. The Tilitson runs much better than the old Zeniths but this one hits the mark. Granted it is not original and looks modern but the performance is far better than the other carbs and I am willing to give up the "look" for a well running engine.
I am not looking to hot rod a Model A engine. That would be ridiculous. If I wanted a hot rod I would go with an Offy, Cotsworth, or small block and build it to 650 stallions and have to change everything from brakes to rear end. My goal is a well running mostly stock reliable Model A. This carburetor fits this bill nicely.
It is an easy install. The only thing you have to be careful about is the throttle lever setting. It takes a bit to get it to adjust properly from complete idle to full throttle. The idle mixture screw actually works unlike some Zeniths. The high speed (GAV) is easy to adjust but takes a few times to get it right. Once set you're done. No GAV to play with inside the car. The GAV rod is just used for the choke.
Throttle response is remarkably improved as is acceleration and idle. You can idle it down to nothing and there is no hint of a stall at a stop. I can't believe how much smoother this makes the engine run.
At the end of the day this is a great carburetor to run on a Model A. It's specs seem to match well for the demand of a stock A engine. For the driver it is the best of all I have used, but I am fairly new to the A. If I want to show the car I can put one of my Zeniths on in ten minutes. I don't have a points car but still a nicely restored A that I am almost finished with.
The only down sides are the look which somewhat resembles a Tilitson and you cannot use the Airmaze or Hi Boy air cleaners as the throat is smaller than an old Zenith. There is an insert adapter that presses on to the throat that I ordered. It costs $20.00 plus shipping. That will allow me to use my High Boy with the K&N. The Carb is $275.00 plus shipping. I think I paid $292.00 total. It's well worth the extra 90 or 110 bucks with the filter adapter for this carb over a rebuilt Zenith.
