Hey gwhite, thanks for helping and posting these images !
Hey Mike V... good stuff, thanks for poll. I do not see place for comments at bottom of poll, so here goes.
Tod: Ed Winfield was acknowledged genius at A/B speed stuff..flatheads and OHV heads. His IRON heads are sought after...for their performance and durability.
Winfield placed the plug between the two valves as in this picture...with the same comb chamber seen (as your image):
This is picture of super Winfield (copy ?) at about 8.5:1 .
Cragar also had a very successful OHV head with plug in (similar,but not exact) position between valves.
So called hemi chamber had/has great success with plug placed between valves.
PLUG LOCATION: So my choice would be that the plug be located approx. between intake/exhaust valves. Maybe a tad closer to exhaust if not centered.
WEIGHT of head; very thick castings please! I suggest that you cast PLENTY thick iron in face of head, so that despite wear and/or unavoidable damage, the head can be milled/fixed safely with no worry regarding thinness of material and subsequent water jacket cracks happening.
NOTE;
I've owned a finned iron head that weighed 53 lbs and performed very well. However, IMO, that heads' comb chamber and plug placement was not ideal as Winfield.
OUTWARD APPEARANCE; If you stay fathful to the Winfield iron heads basic outer appearance,i.e.- proud stud nut surfaces and WINFIELD script and number pad placement , I'd buy either SUPER WINFIELD AND regular WINFIELD copies.
However, If you decide to make a (cooling) FINNED style Winfield/Weiand ....high and/or extra high compression ratios..I'd buy !
NOTE; Winfield made colored heads to denote high and higher comp ratios..we can do our own coloring if wanted, IMO.
ACCESSORIES; I'd like to see a bung/threaded hole(s) at the rear of iron head to facilitate cooling hose attachment and/or temperature gauge attachment.
Plus making provision for LARGE valve use without ending up with thin margins either gasket and/or thin head thickness. Time for nap.....
