Ok, I know it looks messy but please read through it before you check off items as there are A,B, Both kind of questions.

This is for a Winfield style head, not a stock Ford head.

Please post a comment as to where you feel the spark plug placement should be and why, also please comment as to any other option/improvements you would like to see in a head.

As you have guessed Tod asked me to post these questions. You will be able to answer for 30 days then it will close.

Would love to see a correct Winfield or Super Winfield reproduced. Would also be interested in an accurate "police head".

Super Winfield Iron head would be good. Sorry, but don't know enough about spark plug placement to comment, but interested to hear others opinions on the subject

I sent G an Excel version of my Winfield.

I also saved the images as jpegs and pngs. How do I post them?

Tod

Was hoping Larry B.would make some more, but I think the brumfields are gone for good. Glad I have one put back for the delivery sedan. Rod

Tod, here are the images...looks good!

Hey gwhite, thanks for helping and posting these images !
Hey Mike V... good stuff, thanks for poll. I do not see place for comments at bottom of poll, so here goes.
Tod: Ed Winfield was acknowledged genius at A/B speed stuff..flatheads and OHV heads. His IRON heads are sought after...for their performance and durability.
Winfield placed the plug between the two valves as in this picture...with the same comb chamber seen (as your image):

This is picture of super Winfield (copy ?) at about 8.5:1 .
Cragar also had a very successful OHV head with plug in (similar, but not exact) position between valves.
So called hemi chamber had/has great success with plug placed between valves.

PLUG LOCATION: So my choice would be that the plug be located approx. between intake/exhaust valves. Maybe a tad closer to exhaust if not centered.

WEIGHT of head; very thick castings please! I suggest that you cast PLENTY thick iron in face of head, so that despite wear and/or unavoidable damage, the head can be milled/fixed safely with no worry regarding thinness of material and subsequent water jacket cracks happening.
NOTE;
I've owned a finned iron head that weighed 53 lbs and performed very well. However, IMO, that heads' comb chamber and plug placement was not ideal as Winfield.

OUTWARD APPEARANCE; If you stay fathful to the Winfield iron heads basic outer appearance,i.e.- proud stud nut surfaces and WINFIELD script and number pad placement , I'd buy either SUPER WINFIELD AND regular WINFIELD copies.
However, If you decide to make a (cooling) FINNED style Winfield/Weiand ....high and/or extra high compression ratios..I'd buy !
NOTE; Winfield made colored heads to denote high and higher comp ratios..we can do our own coloring if wanted, IMO.

ACCESSORIES; I'd like to see a bung/threaded hole(s) at the rear of iron head to facilitate cooling hose attachment and/or temperature gauge attachment.

Plus making provision for LARGE valve use without ending up with thin margins either gasket and/or thin head thickness. Time for nap.....

Right, Rick. That's where mine will be. The images are just the cutting models that Surfcam will develop cutting programs from. Of course there is more to it than what I have shown, but the basic image gives the idea of the part looks. I will also cut in the piston reliefs. Since I machine A heads all the time it will be very easy to simply add the programming for a different spark plug. Fixturing is already in place.

'I will also cut in the piston reliefs'............or not, depending on CR:)
From poll, looks like more than fifty already...or are polls deceiving :D!

Right. If a customer asks for no relief cuts I can eliminate them.

And it looks to me like 67 respondents. If there are that many interested I will begin cutting the pattern as soon as the other work in the machine and new patterns on order are cut. Probably looking at a month or so before I can get to it. Maybe I can have the basic pattern cut by Hershey time. No matter what, I will have pics posted here as I go along. I will cut one top pattern and 2 different combustion chamber patterns. Giddy up!!

Tod

The polls are favoring just what I was wanting. I hope to buy a 6.1 head to replace mine this winter. Count me in for an order.

I would think going with the B pump so as to get rid of the long bolts at the front and you could get more even torquing for all the studs. If I am gong to put a high compression head why would I want to hide it! :) Varoom

The Crows foot for sure, it was a better design that the later Winfield head. I think
he had to change it for patent reasons with Ricardo. The early one breathed better.

Hey Tod,
Please take a look at the aluminum Winfield that I posted above and another look at the iron Winfield . Particular attention to the really wide gasket support areas of the alum head....BETWEEN cyls 1/2 , 3/4. Now look at the really narrow gasket support same areas of the iron head. VERY VERY important consideration ...is wide/sufficient gasket support in these TWO areas , particularly the higher comp ratio gets.
