1930 Ford Model A coupe

So here is my first real issue with my car, and it had to happen at the start of summer … but I guess it could have been worse.

Would like any of your opinions and take on this matter of what could have done this, and also what you all would recommend me to replace it with. At the moment im looking at the following to replace and fix it.

* Model A Ford Water Pump Rebuild Kit - 21 Pieces - With Stainless Steel

Kit includes 1 each of:

* Straight modern 1/8" pipe thread lube fitting (A772090)
* Brass cup style grease fitting (A772096)
* Impeller (A8501M)
* Impeller washer (A8513)
* Stainless steel shaft (A8501SS)
* Nut-key-pin set (A8506S)
* Gasket (A8507)
* Solid zinc water pump pack nut (A8523Z)
* Original style water pump packing set (A8524)
* Front bearing & race (A8530)
* Front bearing disc/felt washer set (A8542S)
* Brass rear bushing (A8520

* Model A Ford Fan - 2 Blade - Cast Aluminum - Very Nice Quality

MAC's Antique Auto Parts offers a Model A Ford fan that is similar to the original. This fan is balanced, powder-coated Black and includes the fan pulley. Also fits a Model B 4 cylinder through 1934. One piece aluminum casting for added safety.

The imbalance of the missing fan blade is what caused the destruction. I had one these set up's on an engine on a test stand, it didn't take 10 hrs running time before the cheap pot metal pulley broke away from the fan.

No repair kit will fix that! Need to buy a new Leakless Waterpump, and a new fan blade.I've never seen a water pump break like that!!!!????? Make sure your belt is not real tight? I see blades are missing!!

LOL... ok so I kinda know what caused that to happen ( Drive Shaft Dave) lol at the imbalance of a missing fan blade more or less wanted to know what lead up to this and im thinking just a crappy fan or old age? ... and what I meant by fixing it was with a rebuilt kit like the ones I listed, and a new/old water pump housing I forgot to mention Im buying off of someone I met in here that lives near me... In fact I was driving to his house when this happened..

Gary you say you have never seen this happen before LOL lol its just my luck to be a first time owner of a 80 year old car to have something happen like this that no one has seen and has lots of knowledge of the cars ... lol :( .. and I see that you live on Whidbey Island ... I have two daughters that live there ..

So what the take on the leak-less water pump I have heard good and bad on it. And If I went with the leak-less I could by a rebuild kit also.
And anyone have anything to say about the aluminum 2 blade fan I listed ?

Yes a crappy old fan. They crack! The exact same thing happened to me. I failed to routinely check for cracks and it bit me. Lucky for me only a small dent is in my hood. The fan and radiator was wrecked.

I personally know of one other person, and have read here of others that had the 4 bladed fan and it happened to them.

As for rebuilding, the vendors have a "leakless" rebuilding kit.

Thanks mike.. oh I also too got a dent in hood, but really lucky it missed the radiator.
and in a strang way Im glade this happend, Im excited to start my first repair.

so any views on the aluminum two blade fan ? or going leakless verse non leakless

Thanks thats what I wanted to hear...

So I am looking to buy this its on the first link, but it says its for a 1928 - 29 ... I have a 30 .. but im told it will fit .. is it true? also the fan from this company thats on the 2nd link ... do you or anyone know if its made in the USA ?

The other vendors have the leakless kit for 30-31 I wonder why Snyders does not. But yes it will fit fine. The difference is the packing nut. 28-29 brass 30-31 zinc.

and the two bladed fan is just fine.

See how much damage happens when the engine is painted black instead of Ford green.:p:D:)

The aluminum fan is much improved over the earlier batches. It's made in the USA by Snyder's and the last two I saw were excellent in looks and balance.:)

With a generator the belt doesn't need to be very tight. I have about 2 1/2 inches flex midway from the fan to the generator. I see you have a generator tension bracket. I'd remove it because it's not needed and can be used to make the belt too tight.

Had the same thing happen to me !!! The trouble is that repro fan with pressed steel blades held on by four bolts and a cast iron hub .

The blades just fly of when they feel like it!!! the blades are probably poor quality steel. I checked mine a week before it flew off!!!

it took out the rad and water pump.
This has happened to a few people in our club with this type of fan Have rebuilt another pump recored the rad and bought an ally fan and no problem.

If you have one of these fans on your car take it off ASAP.

This is the pump I used along with a new Aluminum 2 Blade fan.

So do you think it was a tention thing that made this go ? and is that generator tension bracket an after market part ? or oem to the car? if it came with the car i want to keep it ill just make sure its not tight next time but if its after market .. its gone..

Have a good look at the second hand water pump housing as they can crack I looked at about 4 before finding a good one.

The trouble is that fan, as the blades are removable when they are taken off or put back on they can easily go on off balance. With any other 4 blade fan you have to remove the rad , but that one you can put together with rad in place but you can't balance the fan when it is on the car.

The bracket may have contributed to the housing failure, depending on how tight it was. Combine that with a fan imbalance and, well you know. Either way it is not original. The bolt used to mount the bracket to the timing cover may have been replaced with a longer one. A domed head 1 1/8" long bolt was originally used at that position.
