My 1st Banjo

Hi Guys

Took delivery of my first V8 Flathead on Saturday, a 36 pickup. It came with a possible U/J failure which I have a replacement on order. Took the joint cover off at the trans end and can see the torque tube is at an angle (see pic). I can see the 2 square headed bolts that hold the trans/rear engine support are both undone and seized solid. I'm guessing that may be why the tourque tube is not square to the ******. I have run some penetrating oil around the threads which I will leave overnight.

My main reason for posting is the manual I have says to loosen rear axle and move it back enough for the torque tube to drop to the ground. Whats the best way to do this? Undo the spring at the crossmember or clamp up the shackle ends to drop the axle?

All advice welcome as I have never done this before and not too many people in London that have either!!.

Thanks
Keith

Keith, the torque tube is supposed to be at an angle.

If you need to remove the rear, you normally unto the u bolts that hold the rear spring to the frame and remove the rear as a whole.

Why do you think it needs a new uj? Is it anything to do with the angularity?

Mart.

I dropped the u-bolts, get up on stands, pull wheels and lower rear axle after pulling necessary items. Zeke

The torque tube will not be in perfect alignment. It is normal to have a drop at the rear. What makes you believe there is a u-joint problem?

Man you guys are quick! Started typing with no responses, by the time I was done you both answered the question.

Truck drives forward ok but in reverse is making a grinding noise around the rear of the trans/u/j area and won't move. Also seller sold truck stating that u/j would need replacing so I took his advice and ordered one while truck was being shipped.

Should those 2 square headed bolts be undone like that?

No, those bolts are wrong.

Do the bolts go down through what look like engine mounts? Is the part that the bolt goes through a solid part of the trans?

You can buy new mounts, they are similar to the engine mounts, or just replace the bolts through the middle.

Mart.

I will check out where they go in the morning. As you can see its pretty mucky but I can see the thread where they are above the trans/engine mount so should tighten down abot 1/2 inch. The rubber under the mount is perished too so will need replacing. Could the enitre trans being moving up and down as truck is reversing causing noise and lack of drive?

Keef, I'd do as stated above,
Set the frame on good solid stands,
remove the wheels,
support the banjo with a floor jack,
disconnect the shocks,
remove the U bolts holding the spring.
drop the banjo enough to pull the entire assembly back a few inches, which will expose the U Joint.

On reassembly, disconnect the torque tube from the banjo and turn 180º, then bolt that unit back up. This will correct the location of the speedometer cable mount as seen in the first photo.

When ordering the new transmission mount biscuits, be sure to specify 1936, or you'll get the later biscuits that are like the front motor mounts.

It looks like you have additional springs on your truck that become active upon heavy loading. True? Post pics of the whole truck, I wanna see!

Hi Keith, It looks like the rear mount has been changed to the later style. The 36 mount is a two piece assembly with a rubber insert between them. The later mount requires that the frame mounts be changed to the later style as well to maintain proper alignment. If the frame mounts have not been changed the easy fix would be to install the 36 mount.
The 36 mount also has a place to mount the emergency brake handle.
Bill

Hi Bill

Thanks for the advice. This truck has the hand brake mounted under the dash by the drivers door. Also has a 4 speed big truck transmission which I guess is when they changed the mount. Managed to shift 1 of the bolts this evening and applied more oil to the other for an overnight soak!!

Wait a second - where do you live? I don't see a garage, but I do see a background that suggests restrictive covenants.

I notice quite a number of different plates on it? are some just for decoration? does it have regular and commercial plates...nice truck, I hope you get er fixed

I live in London, UK and your right no garage!! All work carried out in the fresh open air!! All additional plates were for decoration and have now been removed. Planning on scaling down the wooden bed

3 speed!!! I didn't know it was a 4 speed until it arrived! May look for 3 speed at some stage so will use it. Thanks for letting me know though.

Bob you were right. Finally managed to remove torque tube today and sure enough the u/j is different to the one I ordered (see pics). Does anyone know who stocks this part as I won't find one in the UK?

Thanks
