model A engine with 2 stromberg 97 carbs

i don't like to spin my my motor over 2200, after that it seems like it want's to come apart
It would seem to be too stress for an 80 year old engine to spin too fast, just it would be for an 80 year old person to run to fast!
Or the African Queen Trying to win a race!

The 2 easiest ways to gain power in an A engine are a bigger carb and higher compression. A few years ago I bought a '30 tudor with a stock C engine, with A manifolds and carb. I ran it at a hill climb in Auburn, CA. A few months later I ran it again with a 6:1 Winfield head and improved my e.t. on the hill by a full second. That same day I changed to a Stromberg 81 carb and gained another full second. These hill climbs are electronically timed, so are accurate. Later I changed to a 97, a little bigger carb, and gained another .3 seconds. Adding HP to a stock engine doesn't hurt its longevity as long as you keep your foot out of the throttle. You may need to install a fuel pump to keep the carbs full on heavy acceleration and steep hills.

'31 coupe. 5.5 iron head, Mallory distributor, red's header, Cragar single down draft manifold, Carter 7/16th carb, modified '33 water pump, stock cam-crank-pistons-valves, tremec 4-speed, external oil filter, 12 volt ignition, external timing mark. Runs like a champ all day at 55-60. Must be the ******.

With your improvements what do you think you new HP is? maybe..55 HP?

The change from 4.4:1 head to 5.5:1 would give you 10HP right?
And from updraft to down draft carb should give you another 5HP for single and maybe another 10hp for something like a Stromberg 48 or 97..Right?

Sorry, old age affects me. The Carter is 15/16th bore. As far as HP, don't really know or care, only how it runs.

For my Double A the best bang for the buck was for sure the Snyder 5-5 head, wanting more I was going to go with a downdraft and a Holley 94, I changed direction and decided to go with a Vortex and 2 tillotson carburetors.
I was wanting to improve the almost 2 ton trucks hill climbing ability which was not that bad as I always made use of the Hi-Low box when the hill was taking its toll.
However the improvement was not as much as I had expected, and my fuel mileage dropped dramatically, I am sure the stock camshaft was the problem.
I refitted my B carb and manifold which I am very happy with, the twin carb project was not for nothing as will go on a mildly warmed up engine for a future project.
