Model A dog

When I put my 1929 Special Coupe together I had a vision of a man and his trustworthy Springer Spaniel motoring through the back roads of the piney woods. A man and his dog. When I was ready for my first venture out in the car I called on my pal to join me. Although he had ridden in every form of transportation from small Super Cub airplanes, traveled thousands of miles in modern pickups and lived on a fishing boat in Valdez, Alaska, my dog child would not get in the old car whether it was running or not. When I picked him up and loaded him the poor dog was terrified and slobbered whipped cream foam and got car sick. In his life it was the one thing he could not step up to doing with me. I tried many times after and even let him just sit in it without it running. Smoky was not a Model A dog.

He was such a wonderful old pardner that 10 years after he died I bought another Springer puppy that was from the same blood lines and could have been his clone. Being the original type of guy I am I also named him Smoky. Maybe that is where I went wrong, naming him after his great grandpuppy. Smoky Two is deathly afraid of my Model A Fordor. I put him on the front LaBonney Baron seat and he put his front feet on the back of the seat, faced backwards, put his head down and closed his eyes tight. He rode in this close your eyes, hang on and pray position for the entire 25 mile cruise. I had a whole bunch of stuff in the back seat and floor and he may have been happier there. It is something to try.

As far as the pickup goes all I have to do is say the word "Truck" and he is ready to go. When we get somewhere if I can leave the door open I do and he will go check things out and then come back and wait in the front seat for me to come back, the perfect traveling buddy.

Does anyone else have a four legged pal that doesn't appreciate Model A's?

I'm single and would really like his company on long trips. As it is now he has to stay home and have the neighbors look in on him when I go out of town.

When my mother was alive she said that Smoky had watched me build the car from the ground up and had no trust in my mechanical ability. Mom could be a cranky old woman and she didn't like the Model A either.

Ivoryjohn, sniff!
You ever see a 77 3/4 tear old man cry? Since June, I've been widowed, and my Rat Terrier, Buster T. Brown is my CONSTANT companion, Vicious Watch/Security dog, personal "SHRINK," laughs at litnin' & THUNDER, but is spooky about dog door flap! He does a lot of unpredictable things, (nothing BAD), and that's why I like him, he's his own MAN! He's only been in the truck twice, from ARF rescue & to the vet. He did GOOD! Will he be a Model A dog? I don't know! I leave the driver's door open on "VERMIN" & he leaps from floor into my "BAR STOOL" seat to check for rats/mice. Smoky Two will come around, rub your forearm & face on the passenger seat cushions;) and teach him how to turn on the gas & choke it, so he has sumpthin' to do.
Chief & Momma lived in the South awhile afore' I was hatched, maybe Smokey's Great, Great, Great, Great Grandaddy was SPOOKED by them in their Model A "stripdown," towing their "movin'" trailer!
Man! I love your trunk! Nice car, looks like Vermin's cousin. (My Avatar car) He's Lombard Blue, but looks Green!
I'll get me an OLD machine parts box that looks like it came over on the Mayflower, put fancy brass stuff on it, varnish it and strap it on my "NEW" Zip-A-Rak telescoping luggage rack. Was thinkin' of a young boy manikin on the rack, but Gregg said I might get ARRESTED! Oh well! then I wouldn't have to COOK!:D:D Scratch Smoky's back for me, Bill W.

My sheperd "Idjit" didn't care for rides to much, when she was a pup it seemed the only place she got to go was the vets, after I retired I'd con her into the truck and we'd sneak off to DQ where I'd get her a small cone after a few of those trips I had to teach her to NOT jump in the truck every time the door was open.

My dogs have always loved going for rides in anything.. They want to jump on the tractor seat and even into the saddlebags on the motorbikes..

May be something to it - my dog will "knock me down" to get in my F150, but doesn't seem to be the least bit interested in my 'A' pick up
I just thought it was my dog......

I've noticed that cows, horses, and dogs stare more at my Model A driving by than they do at modern iron. Maybe it's that the A is louder. I don'r ever remember a dog not wanting to go for a ride.

My 5 year old chocolate lab loves my coupe and my Ford Ranger and will travel with anybody. When in the Ranger he's up against the door, when in the coupe he presses all his weight against me, still lots of room toward in cab though, strange how he presses up against me in the coupe.

Scott, my man,
It's as hard to figure out your dog as it is to figure out wives, 55 years with Pat & WELL************
My Rat Terrier is composed of 8 or 9 breeds, picking up the best genes from each, you should try to figure him out! Worlds finest dog, inborn rodent & snake killer, fabulous small game hunter & even used to hunt deer & BEAR! With Greyhound & Whippet in his lineage, he's faster than an A Model with a Weber & overdrive! Bill W.

Do you use BRUTE just before driving the "A?" Dogs love it.:D Buster always waits patiently in bathroom, waiting for my monthly shave!:D Bill W.

I have 3 chocolate labs, one is 1/2 pit bull and a little smaller. I have to fight for the drivers share of the seat in my A pick-up. I built a 29 tudor so I could take the grand kids or dogs with me , but the interior is still new so I don't let them go in that car. But they'll all croud in the truck. The 1/2 pit tries to bite me if I try to leave without her. I've created 3 monsters! Gary

As Dogs can hear sounds we can't, maybe he is trying to tell you something, or there is a sound that just get under his skin, sorta like thunder or fire works. Dad's Dog hears a gun shot and he heads for the house.

Red,
Maybe resistor plug wires would help the dog. They took all the CRACKLE/HUM out of my vintage transistor radio, with 2 weather stations, that I hauled in Minerva. (Don't need no stinkin' U-POD! or U-POOD, or whatever you call them!) Bill W.

When I was a kid, my dad had a 31 CXXX. Our dog rode on the running board. Wherever the car went, the dog went too. When we moved 400 miles away, the dog rode all 400 miles on the running board--at 40 mph. Maybe your dog would like the running board better.

Was your dad related to our next president?:D LOL

"VELCRO" Bulger rode the runnin' boards:D Chief couldn't EVER throw him off! Dogs seemed to ENJOY IT!:D
Tom,
How did this get into POLITICS?? Bill W.

Mitt had a dog that liked to ride on the roof. A friend in S.D. had a German Sheperd that rode on the hood of his Dodge Power Wagon. A piece of carpet was fastened to the hood for the dog.

Our cat loves taking a nap on top of any old car that's available, Model T Touring to Model A Pickup to '42 Tudor. Our two dogs (brother and sister Border Collies) love to ride in anything, but really seem to prefer the Model T for some reason. We have a running board pet carrier for the T (called a Bird Dog Palace) that the male loves to ride in. His sister is just too ancy to ride in anything that smacks of "cage." They don't dislike the Model A's per se, just seem to prefer the T.

our Havenese loves to go for a drive, and has no problems what so ever with our choice of automobile. She has her spot on the rear passenger seat in our tudor.
