MMO use ?

I am always amused at a good oil thread in the making and when people get so flustered that they spend more time in providing their own professional resume than in providing a simple explanation that it is all based on their own opinion and everyone should do what makes them happy or feel secure. :-)

Me, I sit on the right hand of God.......... by the way, he asked me to pick him up a quart of MMO the next time I went to Wally World. :-)

I always use 4 oz per 10 gal. on my own Model A's (Don't fill the tank to the top when gassing up so expansion is not an issue), but what ever floats your boat as I have yet to see any oil thread won and finalized over such. I seldom put it in with every single tank full, but maybe every other or every third. I actually laugh at these sort of challenges as the archives at Ahooga were filled with them and i assume the same goes for fordbarn, too.

My 82 year old friend who died a year or so back had a Piper Cub with a Model A Ford motor in it also used MMO. The aviation industry is not ruled by any one person, so opinions can vary even there. He doped planes for the Confederate Air Force out of Abilene, Tx. for years and did parachute work, too. He had an excellent resume of being an expert with planes and vintage cars, as well.

I got to get off to Wally World, as God put a rush job on my assignment. :-)

I use MMO on the threads of my head studs, then I torque every other one while cold, then get it hot and torque the remainder while hot. I have a Ph.D in BS.:D:D:D

Credentials mean nothing on this site. Some of the non educated site veterans add far more to our hobby than those people that like to exploit their degrees. I am sure that our best Barners have no more or less than high school education. Wayne

"There seems to be a lot of different views on this subject."

Not really. Every time the MMO topic comes up, there's usually only one person with a differing opinion on the subject.

I've been using ATF vice MMO as it's a bit cheaper for all of my tractors and lawn equipment since the advent of ethanol. I have never had any of the problems with stuck valves or decomposed fuel lines (two stroke) that you read about on any of the old car or tractor forums.

I buy the China Mart (Super Tech) brand by the gallon and add 8 oz for every 5 gallon can.

ATF is fine, too, just about any light weight lubricating oil, Rislone, ATF, MMO, etc

I clearly remember when pumping gas at an Atlantic station as a 12 yo in the 60s running my fingers thru the gasoline while cleaning parts, and remembering how slippery the feel was. Do that with today's ethanol-contaminated fuel and you will feel just how dry it really is

Not only is the corn crap fuel dry, but if you clean parts with it you better have good fuel proof gloves on because it hurts your skin. The gas from the 60's never hurt my hands.

I have no idea what the "mystery" is in MMO. But I use it and it works great with pure gasosoline and keeps everything running smooth. It may be Model A voodoo but I use it.

In the United States to prop up the price of corn and make people feel like they are helping the environment.

It makes no sense unless you buy into the above two.

This is not correct. The purpose is to reduce dependency on foreign oil, assist the economy by creating domestic jobs through corn production and help manage the environment. The previous incorrect answer is a political statement. Wayne. .

I use 2 to 3 ounces of MMO in a tank of crap gas as it keeps the gas shut off valve smoother and easer to operate. As for a Ph.D, it is useless until you need to dig a hole,( post hole digger ). Dwayne

Again I need to point out you are spewing misinformation. Aviation gasoline - 100LL to be exact - is the purest gasoline that you can buy. It is made primarily using iso octane and Tetraethyl Lead (TEL). It is extraordinarily pure gasoline, very similar to high octane leaded premium fuel available at gas stations across the country in the 1970's.

You can find uninformed people on the internet claiming some "dry" characteristic for 100LL - this again is something that has no basis in truth. There is no term used by petrochemical companies to describe gasoline that includes the term "dry".

Advice given anywhere needs to be based on facts. Adding gas to your oil is great for your two stroke weed whacker. If you have a two stroke engine in your Model A I would suggest that you no longer have a Model A.

Marvel Mystery Oil (in the recommended quantities) will achieve exactly nothing for your valves. Increase the quantity and you can get carbon build up on the back of your valves and on the tops of your pistons. Oil in the gas of a four cycle engine won't lubricate valves, it simply burns in the combustion chamber, leaving unwanted deposits.

Your valve guides need to be held to a correct clearance to prevent oil being sucked from your crankcase into the engine combustion chamber or exhaust port. A worn out engine constantly has oil being sucked into those two areas. Any oil in the fuel can't make its way into the valve guides - if you believe that you do not understand the physics involved.

I realize that science and facts don't play well to the folks who don't use science and physics to make their living.

The world of aviation is very different than vintage cars, which were designed to run on real gasoline, which was not anywhere as dry and non-lubricating then as it is now, especially mixed with ethanol.

As an example, most civilians are not aware that AV gas has no ethanol at all, and still has some lead. So, you live in a very different world. I would not be surprised if you are running AV gas in your vintage cars if the valves have never gummed up. This is like comparing apples and oranges.

I will agree to stop using MMO if you will agree to fix my valves.

Advice given here needs to be appropriate for the masses who try to have their Model As as dependable as possible, and many of these drivers are not able to do extensive repair on their own.

Well I'm using MMO for my Model A. 23,000 miles and the valves are working fine. So are the pistons and rings. Plus 20 miles per gal of gas. I think some of that oil found its way to the valve stems, and other parts.

OK, you win.

I'll stop.
All the rest of us will have to admit that we are just imagining that our valves are sticking and just imagining that MMO etc. is preventing that. Maybe we all forgot to take our strong prescription medicine. Someone certainly did.

I like the old fashioned containers it used to come in. I even bought a gallon of it back when it used to be available.

Its still on the shelf. Looking very "period."

I'm afraid now to open it - sort of like the Wheaties Box with Larry Bird.

Are Wheaties Boxes with Bruce Jenner worth more or less since his "change?"

Sorry. Thread drift.

I took mine:D

Gads, MMO stock just took a major nose dive due to people finally realizing science and facts don't play well to the folks who don't use science and physics to make a living and are thus uninformed. Glad my 401k invested in much sounder ventures like the Popeil Pocket Fisherman and Ginsu Knives. :-)

not to worry, MMO will live on forever! Scientific evidence or lack thereof means nothing when history supports it use. There is not a damn person on this site whose mind was changed! Wayne
