Master cut off switch installation

Many opinions on providing and not providing cut-off switches, different types, and mounted where:

Just one (1) opinion:

1. Physical Electrical Switch Failure/Switch Interruption: Marine Type is more expensive; however, if one obtains a Marine Switch, it will most probably be designed to resist metal oxidation and corrosion in more humid areas.

2. Ground or Hot Wire Disconnect: Just (1) opinion: Most marine switch manufacturers recommend disconnecting the ground .... for cars with different ground wire or hot wire interruption recommendations, if you car catches on fire, just step out and stand back .... marine switch manufacturers' recommending disconnecting the ground wire ..... unlike a car, if boat catches on fire, avoid trying to swim 25 miles in ice water for help while your boat is burning.

3. Many marine switches have keys for boats left unattended ... if on overnight tour, with one or several Model A's, if Model A left unattended for any period, a keyed cut-off switch with a "removed" key is a little more difficult for a thief to deal with.

4. With floor board cross member installation per above #17, the switch easily accessible from car interior, but hidden by floor mat and involves no metal cutting.

5. Each to his own ...... some of us have to have our wallet stolen once or, a car, or anything stolen once, to experience that first time good Christian Feeling for forgiving Thieves who really need our valuables.

One more picture...

Mine is mounted on the lower starter bolt...I have a short cable so I can dis-connect from inside the cab....

It's in the ground/frame cable, with a short cable to the upper starter mount bolt...

I take it that this short cable attached to the switch handle passes thru to the passenger compartment. It can turn off the switch. Do you have to open the hood in order to reset the switch?

Thanks,

A lot of people recommend an additional ground cable to the transmission housing. If you have that then you'd have to do it at the starter, correct?

No, you can mount the switch at any good spot (I wouldn't drill holes in my metal), then run two cables off the switch terminal to the drivetrain and frame, or one cable to the frame, and another one from there to the ******.

I don't use a master switch, but have my battery cable just hand tight on the battery post. Been working fine this way for over 15 years.

Yes, I need to open the hood to re-set. The cable goes into the passenger compartment through an existing hole in the cab sub frame....I'm guessing there was once a dimmer switch in that series of holes..

I like to look at the engine compartment before driving anyway and I also check the oil....

The switch saved my battery the other evening when I was driving at dusk with the lights on...I seldom use the lights...forgot to turn off the light switch when I parked, but remembered the battery disconnect!
