main seals leaking

Is it possible to drop the pan on my 35 and change the main seals with the engine in the car. Car runs great but leaks bad.
Thanks Bob

If its the original engine it doesnt have seals as in multiples !
Soo where is it exactly leaking ?
How is the general condition of the engine..blowby/oilconsumption ?

If no rope seals is it just leaking from the oil pan gaskets? Leaks in the back and the front. I assumed it was rope seals.
Bob

Rope seal in the front, air seal in the rear. A rear seal leak would be inside of the bell housing.

What in the heck is an air seal. And it is leaking in the back that's why I thought it was a rear seal. What can I do about these leaks without pulling the motor?
Thanks Bob

Need to figure out what is causing the pressure in the engine. Internal crankcase pressure will blow oil past the seal. The seal consist of oil slingers that fit in slots/grooves. The centrifugal force of the rotation slinger throws the oil away from the crank and into the slots/grooves which allow the oil to drain back into the oil pan. There is not a seal to stop the oil, just the slinger/groove passage way. Air can pass through this arrangement. I had always heard them referred to as air seals because air can pass through them. If there is internal pressure inside the crankcase it will force air out caring oil with it.

Maybe the cover is missing from the bendix? I seem to recall my dad had an oil leak at the rear main, caused by the cover being missing. It acts like the draft tube and draws oil through the labyrinth (slinger) caused by the low pressure area behind the hole when the car is on the road.
Other wise the draft tube is blocked (or missing) or the rings have excessive blow by, or it may be caused by some other mod(like having the high vol. oil pump fitted)
As someone else pointed out, the rope (positive) seal never came along until the hydrovent system was introduced 1938.
(I think I must have learnt some stuff while being on this forum!)

There needs to be a threaded tube on the rear main ,dips into the oil ,And stops crank case pressure entering the rear main . Ted

Could this be true!! Damn I had better find a cover real quick just to make sure.. If it's that simple I'm going to give it a go...
