loud clunking as it drives

When driving along ( 1923 FORDOR) there is a severe clunking ( sounds like a rhythmic hammer on the exhaust pipe but we know it is not) When backing slowly it will eventually fetch up with a definite jolt. Seems like it is coming from the rear end. If you turn a wheel by hand it will fetch up at 0 and 180 degrees. If you turn the crank while in neutral there dose not seem to be that noise. Might it be spider gears binding or is there a pin that can slip out part way. Regards, John

(Here is my attempt to be helpful) Universal joint has a pin in it at the front of the driveshaft. Also the universal joint itself can wear out rapidly if it has not been filled with grease for a few years.

I had the same sound once, turned out that one of the engine mounting bolts was missing from the frame and was hammering against the frame when driving down the road.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. As it turned out on disassembly we found that one tooth is broken off the pinion. It looks like one or more of the shims disintegrated and jammed between the pinion and crown. Pinion bushing looks good. The u-joint is very loose and will be adressed with everything else. Crown and pinion, new bushings for the 4 bearings new thrusts new gaskets. I am open to all advise and suggestions. Thanks everyone, Regards John
