Later Flathead Into '48 Ford?

The water pumps need to be changed unless its truck Speedway pumps 91015592
The car oil pan may not work you need truck rear sump. Its a good swap pretty much same engine may have fan problems.

Your top radiator hoses will be a different diameter as well. But they make hose " bushings" to make up the difference. Get them from napa.

I installed a 1950 Merc in my 40 in 1972 and used the folowing:
49-51 Merc car rear sump oil pan, stamped steel bell housing with matching starter plate, pressure plate, flywheel. Your 48 throwout bearing will work. Also used, 8RT wide belt truck water pumps, wide belt gen pulley and 49-50 Ford truck or Merc wide belt crank pulley. The 8BA fan sits so high that it will cut into your 48 Ford top radiator hoses so you will have to 'engineer" this. This problem has also been discussed on Fordbarn. I also used the stock 1940 exhaust manifolds so I think your stock exhaust manifolds will also fit. NOTE: There are other ways of doing this swap using 51 Merc water pumps with spacers. However, 51 Mercs used 2 narrow belts like the later 52 and 53 8BA. My swap used the 10 inch clutch which has worked very nicely over years. HERE'S THE "SEARCH" INFO. IT WILL HELP.

Also, here's another recent discussion about this using a combination of parts.

If my memory serves me right, If useing 8RT pumps, the stock 48 fan assembly can just be bolted on. The 8RT wide belt fan assembly is the same as the 48 car. So if the 8BA is a wide belt truck type (8RT) the front of the engine is already good to go.
The fan issue is on 40 types with the stock fan on the crank.
I think that's right but 19fordy has me questioning my memory.

Scooder, I found that when I installed the stock 8BA style fan carrier bracket, it would bolt up BUT when I raised the generator to tighten the belt the fan blades extended beyond the top tank and would interfere with the top hoses. It was a real problem. I have read on other Fordbarn posts where the solution to this problem is to adapt the 40 fan hub and pulley to the 8RT crank pulley. Here's what I found doing a search. Be sure and read all the links enclosed in the postings. Pretty neat stuff.

19fordy, the Guy is asking about a 48 Ford and putting in an 8BA style engine. Are you talking about puting one in a 40 ?
Martin.

Yes, I am referring to a 1940 installation) but I believe the same info would apply to installing an 8BA into a 48 also. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's much difference regarding the engine/ radiator/fan situation..

Fordy,
The 48 is different, the fan sits where the 8BA one does the radiator is much higher than the 40. The top hoses are at about a 45 degree angle from the heads up to the radiator top tank, rather than almost straight forward from the head to the radiator like on a 40. To illustrate, The starting handle (crank) goes under the radiator in the 48, rather than through the middle on the 40.
