Insurance?

Does anyone have a 3W ford insured by either company, after I finish completely restoring mine I want to insure it for a lot more that $15k. Couldn't find a replacement for less than 40 to 50 k. Just wondering what if someone out there has a similar car that are hard to find, much less replace if destroyed by fire or tornados. Yep I live in Texas. Thanks all G-man

Someone mentioned that Grundy would not insure cars taken on trips overnight. That is not true....I have had Grundy for over 6 years and I am insured for trips of any duration, just not a daily driver "to work" car.

I was going to go with Grundy as I got more coverage for a bit less money. I was told by the person I spoke to that there was no mileage limit, however it could not be use as a daily driver. Its was all fine until he told me no overnight trips, at the end of the day they want it back in your garage. So I stayed with Hagarty as they understood about the touring aspect of Model A ownership.

They should encourage overnight trips. Don't they know most accidents happen within 50 miles of home!:D

So far no one has mentioned J. C. Taylor in Pa. I have them and gladly never had a need to use them Any others had any dealings with them?

I have insured my fully restored 67 Mustang convertible with Hagerty for about $460 a year. I just added the 41 Ford for $30/year. On agreed value for both cars it was simple negotiation. On the Mustang, I wanted full restoration cost, they gave it to me. The pickup was insured for what I just paid for it.

Lets be clear, I did not say that, the agent from Grundy specifically said no over night trips. This call to Grundy was made less than 2 weeks ago, now maybe he was misinformed but if you are taking your car on overnight trips a call to them might save you some grief. Maybe things have changed sense you took your policy out 6 years ago and no one informed you of the change. If you find out different let me know.

Hi Dusty,

Most sincere thanks for your report on what you heard & your sharing this information.

I already sent an email to Grundy, mvp@grundy.com ...... yesterday afternoon at 5:52 p.m. for their clarification -- they usually very kindly respond to keep us informed.

An issue here in the North, Hagerty does not let you drop collision over the winter months while the car is in slumber. I stay with them anyway.

I'm with Hagerty and currently have storage coverage with no collision. It's covered if I trailer it but not if I drive it out on the street.

H.L. great, let us know and like I said maybe the guy at Grundy that I spoke to was misinformed but he made it clear to me Grundy wants your car at home in the garage and not in a motel parking lot.

I use them. Had a claim once and had the check in a week. Towing for $12 a year for both cars! I hear people saying 50 for other companies. I'm very happy with JC Taylor.

Hi Conair 007,

Yes I have a Model A Specail Coupe that I insured at 60K with Hagerty. I worked on this car for 12 years and it received a Henry Ford Award at Lexington.

Before taking it to my first national show (Oshkosh) I called around and Hagerty was willing to insure it for this value if I supplied detailed pictures of the finsihed car. I had never towed a car before (enclosed trailer 2000 mile round trip) and I wanted to make sure that if an accident happened that I would receive a reasonable amount. Might seem extreme but I am risk averse and wanted to sleep better. I do not recall the premium but I believe it was in the 500.00 dollar per year range.

Hagerty was great to work with. Some of the others were not wiling to insure for the value I wanted with just picture documentation.

Hope this is helpful - Hunter

Thanks hunter, once my car is completed, I want to insure it for about 100k. I've had three offers for the car the way it was before I started the restro at 65k. Ill give them a call and see what they say, when I complete my car. Thanks G-man

H.L.
Thanks for contacting Grundy to clarify the overnight status, and it is possible that they have changed since I first took out my policy years ago, so Dusty my apology if I over reacted.....sounds like we will know soon!

I did not realize this was an option. I guess it makes sense for a car that someone knows they will never operate to obtain a lesser coverage. I would think the insurance companies exposure would be MUCH less and therefore the premium should reflect that.

My initial though when you said "not if I drive it out on the street." was about this accident that happened yesterday at the Grand National Roadster Show. Technically he was not "on the street", ...and was just driving it inside the building when the tragedy happened. ;)

JC Taylor
210. a year for 30,000 of coverage

the only caveat with JC that I have heard, if your car is ripped in pieces for restoration, they don't want to cover you. They cover only driving cars. So I may end up switching in the near future.

While I have Hagerty on my own vehicles so I do not worry about coverage when disassembled, something I have always pondered is if vehicle is disassembled in enough pieces that the insurance company no longer recognizes it as covered, does that mean the pieces now would/could/should be covered under someone's Homeowners insurance under personal property? :D

Hello, I want to reply to the post that says Grundy does not cover you if make overnight trips. This is not the case! If you are on a tour, or are taking your car on an extended pleasure drive, you are indeed covered if you leave your car outdoors for the night, for instance in a motel parking lot. Plus, we offer unlimited mileage in our coverage.

We do require that your collector car not be used as a daily driver and that when you are home it must be kept in a locked garage. However, Grundy Insurance is designed so that you can enjoy your car for pleasure driving and touring. We enjoy our old cars that way, and Jim Grundy wants you to do the same!

This isn't meant to be a sales pitch, but please feel free to contact our sales department if you need more details on our coverage and policy features. We insure more Model A Fords than anyone! Bill Hoffer, Grundy Insurance, Director of Marketing

Hello again, This is a great forum, but I'm falling behind in my work! Regarding suspending collision coverage on a trailered vehicle, be very cautious about cancelling that part of your coverage. Here's why: If you are trailering your car to a show or even a paint shop or anywhere, and the vehicle becomes unmoored inside the trailer and winds up in motion relative to the trailer, you still have the potential for a collision! For example, if you have loose straps and have to panic stop, the front of your car may collide with the inside front of your trailer, and this definitely constitutes a collision, because the car was in motion. Ditto if the car falls off the trailer, or any one of a thousand different possibilities. So for the sake of a couple of bucks, it is probably better to buy collision protection even for a trailered vehicle. Cheers, Bill Hoffer, Grundy Insurance
