Installing a termostat Question

I have been waiting for cooler weather to install a 160 Deg. stat. Are there any tips from you guys, or just remove upper hose at the Radiator and throw her in ? Should I drill a couple of small 1/8" holes to re leave some pressure ?
Should the stat which has a neck on it be clamped somewhere or be loose in the hose then stop at the radiator neck? Thanks for your replys.

Drill at least one hole, unless there's some other bypass provision, like an aftermarket hot water heater. Some folks drill two holes. I've done it both ways with no problems.

Seems to make the most sense to fasten it as close as possible to the head, but some folks let it "float" and find its way up to the top of the radiator hose.

I assume you've got one with the stainless ring fastened to it; otherwise, it will get crosswise in the hose and not work so well.

I installed one from Brattons. It had 2 small holes drilled in it and I slid it in the house without a clamp. I assume the leakage through the holes as well as around the stat sitting semi loose in the hose is plenty.
