installing a distrib !

Any tips on how to get this d... dissy back in the hole? Took it out, installed a Nu -rex advance system, put it back together, fired right up and died 30 sec later. Did that a couple of times before realizing the dis wasn't seated to the head, sticking up about 1/8".
I have to keep pushing on the armored cable, line up the dis pin into the hole in the head AND align the dis slot to the shaft slot....all at the same time. Is the slot off set so that the dis can only be put in one way?
Apparently you have to sneak up on it from the drivers side to see the pin/hole alignment. My back is now officially walked off the job, and I just can't seem to get all 3 holes lined up.:confused::mad:
Any ideas?

I had exactly the same problem some time ago and it was the union of the upper and lower shafts being just a whisker too tight. A touch with a small file fixed the problem.

Working from the pass. side, line up your lower shaft slot parallel to the side of the engine, and note which side is the larger. Then line up your distributor shaft to correspond with the lower shaft alignment. Prefit your distributor onto the shaft without the armored cable first to make sure things will go together later when you're struggling with the cable in place.

I put the cable into the distributor, then get my cable clamp started on the #8 head bolt while simultaneously starting the distributor into its hole. Then I grab the distributor with my left hand and rotate it so the pin lines up while pushing down on the cam screw with a large screwdriver. This allows me to turn the cam slightly while exerting downward pressure until everything snaps into place.

Couple of advils I tackled it again, used the rotor in my left hand to turn the shaft, light down pressure and with the right hand I moved the dis body right over the pin hole and it fell in!!!!!
Thanks everyone for your help I'm on the road again and the engine runs much better with the nu-rex:p:p:p:D:D:D
