Idle Temperature

Today I recorded the radiator temperature while the car was stationary with the engine running at idle speed. The engine was completely warmed up. The outsize temperature was 68 F. I took readings for about 12 minutes. Twice I stepped on the accelerator for about 5 seconds to see what would happen to the temperature if I increased the engine speed. The first on was just after the 4 minute mark and the second one was right at the end. Currently I have a 160 degree thermostat installed just above the goose neck at above the head. The thermostat has one bypass hole about 3/16" in diameter.

do you have a mechanical temp guage in line also ? for comparison .......... steve

Thanks again for sharing your data.

Do you know what your idle rpm was?

Interesting that cooling seemed to be limited by flow rate: drop in T upon increasing rpm must be due to higher water pump output.

Steve Norcal,

No I do not have a mechanical temperature gauge inline. What would be the benefit? Most mechanical gauges are not very accurate, not very precise and are slow to respond to changes.

Steve S,

The idle is an average idle I do not have a tach to measure it.

Setting and idle, no air is passing through the radiator so its bound to be higher; remember its possible to drive your a with no fan belt to drive the water pump and as long as you are moving air thru the radiator the engine will stay cool, thermo syphon.
