How to remove window garnish molding, 36 ford

On my 36 Ford 2 dr. sedan, I have 2 windows that when rolled up will not move forward the last inch to close the window completely. I decided to remove the window garnish molding and door panel upholstery to see if I could find out what was causing the windows from moving forward the last inch. On the passenger side door, after removing all the screws that hold the garnish molding in place, I thought the garnish molding would just come out, not so, the molding is loose but will not come out, I have pushed, pulled and wiggeled it every which way, but it will not come out, when I try to pull it straight out, it is hitting some metal brackets ( makes a metalic sound ). I can't see inside the door frame very good, but am thinking the molding is contacting the brackets the molding screws go into. Can anyone explain to me what is stopping the molding from coming out or the procedure to rmove the garnish moldings.

Thanks Glenn

I have a similar issue with the driver side garnish on my coupe. It takes quite a bit of flexing to get the garnish out. The top of the garnish has a groove that will slide up into the door that provides more room at the bottom. Slide the top of the garnish out as far as possible, lift it up, and then try pulling the bottom out If the tabs on the door have been bent inward by overtightening the garnish screws they stop the molding from sliding out.

You might try taking a narrow punch and hit the tabs outward.

The smokers vent made into the window regulator might be your problem. As you turn the crank to lower the window the glass moves back about two inches then as you crank more it starts to drop. Their are slots in the regulator and a shouldered bolt in one of those slots cause the window to move back.

Tom , I followed your advice on bending the tabs, I only needed to bend the vertical one at the back of the door, this allowed me to get the back portion of the garnish moulding mostly out and with a little wrangling the moulding finally came out. Interestingly I rolled the window up and it closed all the way, I did this 4 times and on the fourth time the window would not close the last 1/2 inch, I can see the top of the window glass will not enter the channel at the top of the door. The regulator runs smooth but hangs up about 1/2 way up, with a little force it gets over the bad spot and continues smoothly to the top, so I will be taking the door panel off to work on the regulator. I just purchased this car 4 weeks ago, its an older restoration, do you guys have any tips on removing the clips that hold the upholstery panel on, I don't want to pull them out of the upholstry backing.

Tom and 325w, I very much appreciate your advice, thank you both.

The hang up of the regulator when your "half way" up means that the rollers are at the ends of the channel on the bottom of the glass. The only thing that holds the rollers in the channel is the way the glass rides in the channels at the front and back of the door frame. If the channels are worn (or missing) the rollers could be slipping off the end. That could also be why your glass "misses" going into the top of the door channel. I've seen where someone bent the channels in an effort to keeep the rollers on.

When you get the door panel off you can check out the rollers and channel.
