Good Morning Folks:

I need help understanding how to remove the O/D unit from a '47 Lincoln trans.

I have Ford repair manual that has this trans. in it, but I still can't figure out what they are talking about.

Keep' um runnin'! Thanks.

It has been 40 years since I had one apart. I don't think it can come off as a unit. I believe the housing next to the output shaft comes of first. It has the planatary set. About 16 or so rollers will fall out when it comes apart. I think the gears come off next. Then the control section can be removed. Put a rubber band around the rollers to get it back together.

Tim, Does this look like the later Ford units? You need to remove the pin for the lockout lever and pull that away as well as take the plate off the top and spread the retainer ring. Like someone said the rollers will fall out. I just greased them up to hold them together when I reassembled them. This link to an album I put on facebook may work. Let me know if you need any more help.

I'm only familiar with the Mercury transmssions from 49 thru early 51 so I don't know how much similarity there is. I do know that is has many Lincoln part numbers in it so it is related. As was mentioned earlier the lock out control lever has a pin thet holds it in place. If the pin is pushed out and the lever is pulled out as far as it will go then the tail shaft can come off. From there it depends on how far you want to go. If you pull the retainers off the overrunning clutch inner race you can take it off the main shaft then take the sun gear and rail out. At that point you can take the adapter plate out but you have to deal with the main shaft so the rest of the transmission has to come apart too. The Borg Warner overdrive set up is integrated with the rest of the transmission enough that it's not really a seperate unit.

As they said.....remove little tapered pin aside the OD lockout shift lever. It's often covered up in crud. Tap it up and out from the bottom since its tapered. Then pull the lockout lever out as far as it will go....about 1/2" roughly.

There should be a small access hole on the top of the OD gearbox housing. Remove the cover and you will be looking at the OD ball bearing and its snap ring. Loosen the 4 bolts holding the housing to the OD trans adapter (the casting sandwiched between the OD housing and the 3 speed gear box housing.

Now, use a pair of lockring pliers to spread the snap ring on the ball bearing (reaching down into the access hole). While you are spreading the lock ring as wide as the pliers will go, tap on the end of the output shaft in the OD housing with a soft hammer. This should start the housing moving enough that you can release the snap ring and simply pull the housing off. The freewheel cam rollers will most likely fall out as you do so. Not a problem....just catch and save all 12 of them.

This will open up the OD guts for a quick inspection. Some of the parts can be removed in further steps (freewheel cam, planetary gear, sun gear, etc). That hidden ball bearing will be pressed on the OD output shaft next to the ring gear. Its snap ring will be inside the OD gear housing....loosely sitting in its groove.

Thanks everyone. I haven't gotten a chance to fool with it.

I re-re-re-organizing my garage for the 3rd time in 3 years. Man, I never realized how much stuff and/or junk I've accumulated.

I hope I didn't damage the cluster trying to man-handle the O/D unit trying to force it out from the back.

I'll keep you all posted. I appreciate your posts and advice.
