Houdaille shocks

I have a slight seepage of fluid in my front driver side shock. I am presuming that the O ring seal is bad. However when I removed the shock, I discovered that the unit has the following embossed around the square nut: "Hydraulic Shock Absorber Made in Chicago Ill." Below the filler plug Ford ( in script) is also embossed. No where does Houdaille appear. Are these shocks reproductions ? Can they be rebuilt, and resealed? The reservoir cover also appears to be one piece, although there is what appears to be a phony seam where the lock ring abuts the cover. The spanner wrench holes are in the " lock ring" 180 degrees apart. The shock really operates well, with nice resistance up and a bit more on the down stroke. Does anyone have info on these? Ron

Thanks guys. Darryl, that is a great answer with all those links I have a good idea what I am up against. One question... it appears in the pictures, and on mine as well, that the cover and lock ring are NOT separate and that the cover( the whole thing) just turns off with a good Pin Style spanner wrench, or a large pipe wrench. Is that correct?

rons49,

There is a separate locking ring and cover, I took a punch and unthreaded the locking towards the base, away from the cover.

If you look closely at the photo on the left you can see the "O" ring above the locking ring. There is an angle cut into the locking ring to hold the "O" ring into a groove, can't remember if the cover also has a corresponding groove.

I then used a strap wrench to unscrew the cover.
