Hood Hinge Rods

You can buy replacements in stainless steel. Probably not needed if you dont drive in the rain, or leave the car outside, but at least they will not rust.

-I use WOOD DOWELS, soaked in Linseed Oil. Plenty STRONG & no rusting or squeaking. I dab the ends with hood color.

The hollow center rod was hollow for a reason
A hollow rod is more rigid in that size than a solid one. No sag, roll or flex
I have to say the wood dowel post leaves me a bit curious
But don't think I'll try it!
But old Bill is credible!!

Being a rather good woodworker, (Ape pounds self on chest..) I would be most interested in the kind and species of wood he recommends.

I would not do that either for reasons stated in the above post. Plus some more..

Larry, they're just regular BIRCH dowels. I got the idea when I was using the dowel on my FLAG, to align the hood parts. I NEVER recommend stuff that hasn't worked for me. NOW, I have to find out WHY the hour hand doesn't move on my Dale Earnhard NASCAR clock???? & find out why his car doesn't ZOOM around, on the HOUR???--What time is it???--Did I miss Santa Claws??

Bill.. Whatever works. But only for a while. Here's what can happen:

Few woods are resistant to moisture. White Oak is one of them. Birch is really not
Birch is an intermediate hardwood and will score diametrically
Wood that is only 0.256 is very prone the shattering and will bend easily, losing the ability to maintain hood section straightness that is required to keep the hood sections in-line.

But, what ever works for you, Bill.. Plug the clock back in.. ;)

I'm for wood. It ain't gunna break. With oil it ain't gunna get wet.

Those stiff hinge pins could turn into a lethal spears in an accident ...

Wood would (or is that wood) would turn the bonnet/hood into a crumple zone.

Wood for safety.

I think if wood was such a great idea, Ford would have used it for the hood hinges. Ford used wood in various places on model A's, but not for hood hinge rods. Wood has tendency to swell and rot even when soaked in an oil or a preservative. Wood also isn't very strong. Why not use stainless steel for the hinge rods? It wont rust, swell or rot. It seems like a no brainer to me.

Don't worry, I'm NOT sellin' WOOD-LOL. "Everyone" likes to try their own "Inventions", just part of the Model A FUN! As P.B.S. always says, "STAY CURIOUS"! I've read here, about center hood hinges rusting & paint peeling & thought it "might" help. Do any of you wurry about your body blocks rotting & causing a "loose" body???
