it would be the number one. This is a 1931 engine stamping. Ford made a change in the design of the 0ne, six and nine in March of 1931..

The bottom 3 is aftermarket – you can see the font is different from the 3 in the serial – and was likely put there by a prior owner or rebuilder to indicate something relevant to them.

3rd rebuild

The engine in my phaeton has "100" marked below the serial, you think it's on its hundredth rebuild?

I agree that each engine likely has markings added by each individual rebuilder as a way to identify an engine going thru their shop. I know of one well-known Model-A engine rebuilder who has a notebook listing each engine they have rebuilt since their beginning including the date, customer's name, block serial number, and pertinent sizes of internal components. Since I offer lifetime warranties on my engines, I also document the same info including whether the engine pad is native -or if it has been restamped. Most of the warranties for rebuilt engines have typically been for the original customer, and so unless the previous rebuilder is known, the numeral 3 or the 100 will likely remain a mystery.
