Hey Im removing the the radiator and I need some help...How do I remove the quail radiator cap from the Rad Shell and Radiator...I see a set screw but I dont want to break anything...Any help would be great oh and pictures too...thaks a million
Ryan

If a repop, only one set screw in the back, i remove the set screw completely, then lefty loosey to remove, righty tighty to install. I remove the set screw completely to keep from damaging the threads on the rad. neck. If it has been on for a while it may be tight, the gasket will stick from heat...

Ryan,
One set screw on the back. After you remove it, put a strap wrench on the base and unscrew the cap. If you don't have a strap wrench you can you a large pair of channel locks or a pipe wrench, but you better wrap the base with something or you're going to screw it up.

Jeff,
WD-40 is not a penetrating oil. It is a water displacement, hence WD. The 40 stands for the 40th formula. It was developed for NASA to dry things out.

this is probably TMI but in high school and a few years out my nic name was WD - wonder d*** they always wondered how i got all the girls, man them were the days...

Ok thanks guys I just got back from Lunch Im going to try it out I will let you know what happens....Thanks

First if its a original Quail [repro i don't know] on the other side of those 2 allan screws there are 2 brass tabs threaded for the allan screws to hold in place and to lock down the cap on top of the radiator. NOW these 2 brass tabs on 2 of their sides is POT METAL walls which is part of of the cap to stop the tabs from turning in circles as you try to remove the allan screws...YOU break the sides you throw the cap away or Doc K has someone who he knows can fix them [for a nice price..if its original] if repro throw it away. Now what i did was to bend a needle nose plyer in a "L" shape and thru the top of the radiator hold the tab in place while trying to unscrew the allan screws. GOOD LUCK its a *****! Any flip top cap is the same ...

The posts above that mention allen screws inside the cap and brass tabs are referring to 1930 - 1931 quail.

The 1928 - 1929 quail had just one set screw in the back on the outside. Once the set screw is loose, the base of the quail will unscrew from the threaded radiator neck.

I thought it was interesting how much help he got without anyone asking what year the cap was!

I guess RYAN 1929 i should of known... 1929,, not saying he might have a 30 or 31... anyway hope all works out.... Thanks Timothy K ,i did not know about 28/29 quails...now i know...

Sorry gone for the day,, there is a screw in the back if a repo... I see many others mentioned...good luck

yep, 28-29 just one allen set screw, then a strap wrench, be careful not to scratch the chrome finish on your cap. they are usually tight then after the first quarter turn you're home free.

When you put the set screw back in,put a bit of never-sieze on the threads. It,s a tiny screw just above the hood hinge. If removing the two screws that hold the 30-31 locking cap, always use anti-sieze on them too.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. This is why I love ford barn.So many great people. Thanks again the trick worked and im well on my way installing the new Rad.
