headlight switch

I have a 55 ford with the 6volt electrical system still in tack. I recently put in a new dimmer switch because one night I turned on my headlights and had none. But, a quick flick of the dimmer switch and I had high beams. So, I found a new dimmer switch on e-bay and installed it. Right before I buttoned everything up I tested the switch. Low and behold I had low beams. Well this morning I took the car to get a newspaper turned on my headlights and they disappeared. I flicked on my high beams and I was right back where I was before. I took a look at the dimmer switch and tested the connections one connector must be the main juice and each side connectors must be either low beams and high beams. Everytime I flicked the dimmer switch to the low beam side it checked out to be getting current but, not lighting the headlights. I flicked on the high beams and I knew I was getting current to that side because the high beams were on and I could see them on. Also my parking light won't stay on they start to flicker a few minutes after being turned on. My question is: Is my headlight switch bad?? If I replace the headlight switch will I have to replace the dimmer switch also, or will it come back and work?..................Dave

If you're getting power to the dimmer switch, your headlight switch is fine.

Check all the grounds on your headlights and park lights first. Intermittent or bad grounds will give you the symptoms you describe.

Your lights must have clean solid grounds to work properly.

There is a loom connector by the left side of the radiator support. Check all those connections then the grounds.

Did you remove the wires off the headlights for any reason and do not have the 3 way connector? if so, you may have gotten the ground to the wrong terminal.

But yes - I agree that you probably have a bad ground at either of both of the headlights.
