Head gasket orientation ?

1942 Merc 239, 29A heads, assembling with Best composition head gaskets. There is a V shaped notch in one end of each gasket. Is this to indicate orientation? Notch to front or rear? The only thing I see that would indicate that they may be directional is that the two cooling hole openings at the bottom between the pairs of pistons is not the same size. Thanks, --

The V notch goes to the front. I think you'll fine there is a water hole on each end of the gasket, the bigger hole goes toward rear. Walt

Hey Bob I have a related question I have the same motor 239 ,29A heads , out of a 39 big truck what color are your heads mine are 'dark' ford blu as is everything else the intake ,block ,,just interested if this is the same. I haven,t looked at my new gaskets yet ,I,m still workin on replacing the head studs, ones busted flush with the head, havnt started on the others yet thanks mp

Mike, mine was pretty greasy with surface rust where there was no oil or grease, but I found dark blue paint under all the gunk. The rebuilt engine is gloss black now. It's not a restoration so I wasn't worried about originality. The engine is going in a '29 roadster pickup. By the way, my engine came out of a fire truck.
