Head Bolts

My friend Gary felt that the shoulders on the Ford head bolts was to narrow and distorted the top of the heads ...

Correct he is as if the holes on the head are not machined properly (common FYB problem) can cause erratic torque readings.

That may account for why it had coolant seepage as the head was not torqued down correctly and was 'floating' allowing the coolant seepage.

Are the heads of the ARP bolts 5/8 or 11/16 ? Curious why washers when Ford did not use washers.

UOTE=metro1;2266711]I received the bolts yesterday (they are ARP). As long as you use the supplied washers on them, which are chamfered on the bolt head side, they measure within 1/16 of the factory length.[/QUOTE]

These are flange bolts with a 1/2" hex and 3/4" bottom. The washers are 1/8" thick and 13/16 dia.

Here is a tech note from TED EATON -

When using the ARP head bolts, I will install the bolts first without the washers to ensure that the bolts do fully seat against the bolt heads before removing to install the washers and then torquing the bolts. When milling the heads and blocks, the head bolt thread lengths do get dicey.
