Generators with screw on pulleys

How do you secure the pulley on a gen with a screw on pulley. I am running one now that had enough threads left to put a thin lock nut on but most do not have threads exposed when the pulley is screwed on. Having had a fan go into the radiator once is enough for me!

I have one that does not have a snap ring.

I put the pulley on before the generator was assembled. I held the armature in a vise with two pieces of soft wood to protect it and put the pulley on using a chain wrench. A strap wrench would probably be better but I don't have one.

You don't have to go mad at tightening it, the load is always trying to tighten rather than loosen it.

Plus the screw on type don't have a fan on. Or at least the ones I have had do not.

x3... they did originally have a snap ring of sorts. Note the groove at the end of the armature shaft...

Thinking about it, mine is converted to 12V so the armature is Y block. That's probably why there is not a circlip groove. Having said that the 01A 6V job I took the pulley from did not have a groove either.

Can only report what I found.

I lost a pulley on a V 12 Lincoln on first start up. Fortunately it did not damage the radiator. True the forward motion of the belt tries to tighten the pulley on the generator, but on coast down, the reverse is true. There should be a clip in the groove on the end of the shaft.

I had 1 screw on pulley that was for a fan. It had a 4 digit part number that wasnt anything like a ford number. I found it in a schoolbus in a old junkyard.

I guess it wae aftermarket but judging by the looks and were i got it im sure it was old

Over the years, armatures get replaced and one that works isn't necessarily the factory correct one. That is why you find generators that should have the groove but don't.

I was able to apace the armature in one I had far enough forward to get the pulley and a thin nut on it. I have thought about drilling thru the pulley under the belt groove and putting a pin in there. I have some armatures with the groove and some without.
