So i pulled the drums off my car today to grease the bearings and give it a general once over after a hard trip in the mountains on dirt roads. When i pulled the drums, i noticed that the outter bearing doesnt want to seat all the way on the spidle, and the bearing surface on the spidle looks like someone had taken a center punch to it all the way around. The inner bearing is STUCK. I had to break the rollers out of it, and heat up the bearing red hot to get it to slide off, even then it didnt wanna go. Same story, center punch marks all the way around. What gives and what should i do?

I have another front end with good spindles, but the inner bearings are stuck on that too.

It's a way of "knurling" as apparently the bearing spun in the past so a new one would do the same. The center punch knurling keeps the bearing(race part) from spinning. Of course it's unknown how much is too much and then you end up with not being able to get the bearing off without destroying it. You could file the punch marks down and try for a less tight fit or look for a better spindle.

Go with other spindles, or just change the axle out with the one you have! If you don't, you're just looking for a breakdown when it is NOT convenient.

What Roger said.. It was a common fix.. When I was a youngster Ford had that problem with their front hubs and their fix was to punch them and reinstall the cup.. I was kinda surprised to watch the factory rep do it.. So, you can just try and file the spindle to get the cup to fit somewhat correctly and replace the spindle when You get some spare time.. There were quite a few old vehicles running around with a lot of punch marks in them somewhere..

I am with Jim. I found a similar "fix" on my coupe so I replace both spindles and hubs. I had to get new cast iron drums anyway.
