was needing to put new gaskets in the intake and a keeper or half of half a one fell out, I had the intake off about 50 miles ago to install a fish carb, I had planned to take it down the freeway this weekend to the dragraces and watch.... Verdict? think the intake valve are gonna bend going 50-55 for an hour each way, I see another one has creeped up but it looks old. I dont have a way to repair

Looks to me like you have the broken off portion of a Valve Guide half. The shouldered portion of this guide and the one coming up through into the port will still be in the valve chamber. The Valve Spring retains the Guide up against the Block. The shoulders of the guide may have been knocked off or cracked during installation. In the least this valve needs to be removed and examined. Remove the spring keeper and spring, use a valve guide tool under the open valve and push the remaining valve guide parts out and examine the valve stem, you might get lucky and be able to only replace the guide.

unfortunately my 26 roadster is in Germany, this is my only car left to goof around with that runs.... ignorance WAS bliss

Questions?
In photo # 3 towards the 3-1/2" end on your ruler, does the edge look rough or broken?

In photo # 2 is this another valve where the guide is coming through the port? Are there others that appear to be coming up through the ports?

Being split, this almost has to be a broken original style valve guide. You might be able to use simple tools to remove the keepers and springs, but you really need a Valve Guide removal tool to get the guides out. That is unless they are so loose in the boss that they are falling out, or loose enough to be moving around and breaking.

Holy crap, man! Take another car, or fix it while it could still be any easy and affordable repair. If you have deep pockets, drive it like you stole it and put a new motor in it.....

the edge is rough and broken although its peened over smooth, must be a small portion holding the valve inline. other valve guides, all of them are above the casting, I have another engine where all the keepers are not visible

Barron, the photos show half a guide, so I'm sure that's what you're talking about. But if you're also talking about the keeper, that is a different part. Do you have both problems? Whichever is the case, don't drive it till you fix it.

Go's to show you them Model A's will continue to run in almost any condition.....for awhile anyway, then the big bucks has to be pulled out of the sock.

valve guide . dont even start it untill fixed . skip the drags & fix the car ..........

What you are looking at is not the Keeper but part of a Valve Guide. If you look at your first photo the keepers are located at the mushroomed end of the valve (bottom of photo) holding the spring onto the valve next the the Cam Followers (Tappets or Lifters same thing) The keeper looks more like a horseshoe. If you were to take a large screwdriver, with the valve closed, you may be able to pry the spring up and push the keeper out sideways. Stay clear of the Valve Stem or you may score it. Try a small block of wood to get more leverage. Push the valve up as far as it can travel and pull the spring out. The spring is what holds the Valve Guides in place. I would be willing to bet that the guide will be loose enough to come out through the valve chamber with little effort. Then you can check to see if the Guides are loose in the block and the condition of the Valve(s). Other wise you will need a Valve Guide Tool to remove the guides, they are inexpensive and someone near you probably has one, and a Valve Spring Tool also.

I know it stinks to have the Ford down for repair, but the consequences could be far more expensive and time-consuming...

Not "defeat", rather "choosing wisely"... ;)

I have a trick up my sleeve

I knew of this roadster for awhile, made a deal and bought it today, body is sold to Germany before I got home.... the chassis is what I'll use to fix the valve guides.... it has a rebuilt motor and trans, "C" head, nos waterpump, 12 volt, early juice brakes, plumbed and working, Volvo overdrive, nos springs, new 19" wheels and tires.... list goes on
