Fordomatic speedo cable question

Hi Guys

I read all the threads I could find and read my manual about replacing the core on the speedo cable. I pulled the core out, cleaned it real good. Inpected it and it is not twisted or broke.

The speedometer on the 55 was making noise and jumping around. I greased the lower 2/3 of the cable and tried to reinstall. Now the problem, I can't get it to seat back in the ******.

My manual says to just turn until it lines up and push it in. It feels like I get it started because it quits free turning, and then it won't go all the way. I tried for about an hour and gave up. Is there some trick you guys could pass on?

I was going to pull the cluster and oil the head as one of the posts said if greasing and cleaning the cable did not fix it. Will I have to take loose from the ****** end to get it in?

Thanks,

It should actually be easier to get the cable to engage than a passenger car because the T-Bird has that 90 degree gear connection at the transmission end so the cable is more "straight in", whereas on the passenger car models, the cable is making a sharp corner in the housing.
I suggest pulling the cable in and out very fast while turning and see if you can get it to engage.

One way to check if its all the way in is to raise the rear of the car and turn the wheels. If the cable turns, then it's in the trans ok. Another way is to try to insert it in the speedo. If the outer cable won't get close enough to screw the cable to the speedo, then the inner cable may not be in the trans and is sticking out too far.

I think the fact that you push it in and then can't turn it means that it is in the trans - my guess.

Thanks guys, It does feel like it is engaged as it won't free spin. I may jack it up and turn the wheels. When I pulled it out most of the black rubber type end was all the way back in the housing and just the wire clip stuck out to engage the female end of the speedometer head. I have not tried to screw it back on cause it looks like it is still out to far. If I take it loose at the ****** do I stand a chance of the little gear falling inside? I have read about this. The manual does not cover that.
