Any idea how this can happend?

is the starter being used on 12V
does the broke off piece look to have been hitting the flywheel/ring gear
is the spacer missing under the spring

Can't see the wear pattern on the gear, if there is a mismatch of flywheel/bellhousing it could be meshing too deep

it could be a cheapo rebuild where just the pinion gear was rerplaced and the parts wern't put together very well

is the starter shaft bent

In addition to the two through bolts did it have a bracket bolt to frame? If not the weight coulda done it

Hi there, All of the things Kurt said or maybe just old age wear and tear, 80 years work ?? I notice the forward collar on the drive sleeve is split and has been welded up. Best to fit a complete new starter drive and see how it goes. Regards, Kevin.

can`t tell you how it happened, but the same thing happened to me a week ago. replaced the Bendix drive and all is good . . . so far.

tex29, the replacement bendix drive that i used was a vintage ford part. i avoid as much of the reproduction stuff that i can.

I put a reproduction bendix on a starter last month and it looked like that in 3 days...

Same here, only mine made it almost two weeks before it looked like that.

Junk Chinese made parts. Soon all the good stuff will be gone and that's all that will be left.

Getting pretty old. Another hobby may be in the works I'm tired of dealing with all the junk anymore:mad:

The small bracket mounts to one of the starter bolts, and then to an oil pan bolt......
Below is a pic of a new starter bracket. Sorry, don't know if pic will load or not.
