Flathead Fans, - It can be done!

The feat was, - installation of engine into '41 coupe with the transmission and starter attached, with headers still hooked up in the car. So I was able to avoid the two things I hate the most about working on old Fords: -installing the starter, and anything to do with exhaust pipes. The trick to threading that needle was having the adjustable leveler on my Strongway hydraulic lift. (Under $150 on sale at Pep Boys, plus $30 for the leveler)

The engine was rebuilt to 286 cubic inches with SCAT stroker kit and Schneider 248f cam by Jimmy's Engine Service in Lanexa VA, a wide place in Route 60 near Williamsburg. John Mullen is the long time flathead mechanic who works part time in that shop. He is a perfectionist who knows all the tricks. It ran very sweet on the test stand. I will report on the road test in a few weeks.

Last year my wife said she needed a truck to haul feed and stuff for the horse. I told her we could not afford a new one, so I would find a nice used one. Insofar as I am well into my second juvenile delinquency, it had to be a flathead Ford hot rod. Found this restored '34 pickup with a rebuilt '53 Mercury V8 and 3,000 miles, at half the price of a new truck. Stock engine besides Holly four barrel and headers. Runs and sounds great. C4 automatic makes it a little easier for her. She loves it and drives it regularly.

When I finish the engine install on the '41 coupe, we will have a choice for the Friday evening cruise-in at Shorty's Diner.

John Mullen and Jimmy's engine service are top notch. I have had most all of my engine work done there. Very glad this all worked out for you. I actually passed you n Richmond road coming out of the Shell station across from the elementary school with the engine in your truck.

I also heard your engine run. What a great little motor that is - miles of smiles to you and hopefully we will meet up at Shorty's on Friday nights this cruising season ....

Tom,
Actually, I was pulling out of the feed store next to the Shell. I think I heard you honk. Two 50 lb bags of feed plus a full dress flathead was probably a bit over the weight limit for that little truck., but nothing broke.

If you see the '34 truck or my '41 coupe at Shorty's, please introduce yourself.

Dave, Sorry I wasn't there when you picked up your flatty.. Jimmy and I liked that engine very much.. Your cam selection was spot on and I know you will love driving it around .. I will keep an eye out for you around town this summer. I would love a ride when you get it installed.. Thank you for letting us do your engine build.. I'm proud of every flathead I build but this one was exceptional....
