flat-o-matic

Does anyone know the cost of the flat-o-matic kit to mate up the c-4 to a y block and how much work is it to install. Thanks carguy01

Its 495 plus 30 bucks shipping ( about a year ago).

It was pretty easy to install, but I had the engine out. The worst part was getting the converter in the correct position to install the trans to the block. You may have to bend the dip stick tube so it does not hit the valve cover, depending on which C-4 you use. A little heat and your all set.

I welded a bracket onto the bell housing to hold the dipstick tube in place as the factory bracket did not reach the bell housing bolts.

Parts are well made and everything fit..

I would say it is easier to install than the FOA due to the C-4 being so much light. You will have to modify the trans mount some. Gene has speedo cables also if needed. Great kit, everything fits as it should. I used a Lokar flexible dip stick tube and Lokar kick down cable.

As a bonus the C-4 has less drag than most autos so more HP gets to the ground.

In the majority of cases the C4 and AOD can be mounted to the existing trans crossmember with an ANCHOR 2253 mount available at Autozone or O'Reilly's for a $10 bill.

thanks everyone i checked out the kit that jeff sent me info on it was $895 dollars compared to the flat-o-matic at $500 dollars I'm still undecieded on which one i want. I don't know if a specific flywheel has to used or what. But I thank you guys for the info.

The flywheel (actually the flexplate) is supplied with the Flat-O kit. You don't have to worry about balance since the Yblock is internally balanced.

I bought the rear mount from Flat-O. It really a stock C4 mount with elongated holes. Fit perfectly on my 56 TBird.

Go to the flat-o-matic website and read the instructions and you will see the difference between the two kits, the flat-o-matic requires some welding on the converter and you must get a big block FE starter also which is why it is cheaper, the $895 kit is all bolt on no modifications or welding needed and a Hi-Torque mini-starter is included.

Welding is minimal on the converter studs. That leaves ~$350+ for a starter?

If you are doing alot of highway driving in your car you should consider the AOD. Other wise you will have to run higher gears (lower numerically) in the rear end with the C-4.

My engine is turning ~3000 RPM with 3.55 gears and 27" tall tires At 70 MPH. With the AOD it would be ~2200 RPM with everything else being the same.

It all come down to what YOU want and what kind of driving you do.

y-blockhead can you tell me which flexible dipstick and tube you used? also which kick down cable? Thanks --Jim

Hi Jim. I used the Lokar kickdown cable specifically for the C-4.

And the Lokar flexible dip stick also specifically made for the C-4. You can just make out the handle by the lower heater hose. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/lok-td-30c4fm/overview/ It mounts to the fire wall.

I used their throttle cable also. Made it easier to connect to the trips.

Lokar stuff is not cheap but it is very good quality.

Thanks for the links, I will ck them out. very nice looking eng, I am thinking of using one of the dipstick tubes and sticks. is the dipstick tube you are using the push in type with the "o" rings, or is it the one with a nut that is installed from inside th trans pan? I know the picture in your link shows the push in , but they do not always use the correct picture. the reason I ask is there is no kick down on my 30 coupe ( not even a kick down sw. ) only linkage for the lokar shifter. ( installed by the previous owner ) also the dip stick tube does not fit correctly and does noes not sit down far enough into the case to seal correctly and it leaks. I hate that. it is kind of embarrassing.

Jim, My C-4 has the push in type as I have a 'Case Fill' C-4. The other type is for a 'Pan Fill'. In your '30 I would guess you have a Case Fill for clearance?? as the Pan Fill is wider in this area. (Just guessin', my '30 Town Sedan has the stock crash box...:rolleyes:
