First Start - C59A

"The most restrictive part in the whole coolant system is probably the thermostats themselves, so not entirely sure if I’ll ever add them back. I will never operate this engine at anything close to below freezing temps so not sure if they’re really necessary."

Yes, probably but when you have more time on the motor, you may find the radiator is cooling too much. You could also spend some more money and use a butterfly or ball valve to restrict flow although thermostats aren't all the bas. They're like having an orifice plate in the pipe. I used to do all this piping, valves and pressure vessels for a living on power plants and refineries :-)

I over bought the radiator in my '32. It ran a little hot for a few miles as I mentioned. Now I have a poor man's winter front where I can control airflow through it. Works good.

Re. Tubman's comment, "My advice is to start looking deeper if you can't get it cleared up right away. Don't just plow ahead."

You can get a decent infrared thermometer from Harbor Freight that works well. Check each of the exhaust runners and the adjacent block. It could identify a local issue.

Regarding the snow machine, I had an awful time getting my Toro lawnmower going this week. I don't give up, and tried everything I could and pulled it 100 times at least. It runs like a champ now and I think it may have been an adjustment of the governor, fast idle speed screw and a vacuum hose fitting, that were to blame. All hoses replaced, new plug and electronic module, new carb but put old one back in. About $25 for all parts and it's good as new now and all set for Spring!

Still in the process of laying out my rad fan shroud. Should be done tomorrow, and hopefully in a couple days, should be fabbed up.

When it comes to small 2-stroke engines, I don’t have anything large, but always get premium fuel which seems to do the trick. My BIL always had issues with starting his 4-wheeler, boat motor, and lawn tractor every season. lol! He refused to get premium fuel.

Got it running again, sort of, with the dual 94s installed on my vintage Edmunds 2 x 2 intake. It was taking forever for fuel to drain down from my lawnmower fuel tank through a fuel filter into the fuel pump sediment bowl. So, I took apart both carbs and filled their bowls. It did start after dribbling a bit a fuel down the primary carb, but only for a few seconds. I’m hoping that overnight, it filled up the fuel lines, etc. Will try again this morning. Links to some vids of it running.

Sounds good when it does start. Good luck with it. Are you working on the body and chassis much?

Thanks. Not yet. That’s the plan for the fall/winter/spring,but we’ll see how things go. I do plan on making all the body panels myself though.

Seems to run fine to me. I didn't hear any "poppin' and bangin'". I would put the choke plate back into the rear carburetor though. Common knowledge is that the airflow is disrupted without it even if it is not used.

Me either and 2nd you on the choke plate.

Latest vid. Testing is done for now. I’m happy with the dual carb setup for the moment. Still needs some tweaking, but the progressive setup seems to be working fairly well. I’m guessing with how the linkage is set up, the secondary carb starts to open up at 30% - 40% of full throttle on the primary carb. When the time comes, I’ll also try a direct linkage setup, but those that are hesitant to try a progressive setup with this style of intake should be aware that it works despite what many folks warned me about. Haha!

Congratulations; your engine sounds great. I have always believed that that particular style of intake was initially designed to use a progressive linkage. Will progressive work on a "Super", no, because it's a completely different kind of manifold. Not all dual manifolds are greated equal.
